Dean concerned elections will be stolen again...Progressive for June.
http://www.progressive.org/june04/intv0604.html

SNIP...."Q: People often ask me, "Will Bush give up power if he loses?" Do you have any fear that he would not go quietly?

Dean: My biggest fear is that the election will be stolen again as it was in Florida by the elimination of large numbers of the African American community from the voter rolls by a private company contracting with the state. The election was clearly not won by George Bush in Florida, and then the Supreme Court put politics above loyalty to the country. So that's my greatest fear: not that George Bush won't go quietly according to the law, but that before the law gets enforced there will be a great deal of fiddling with it.

Q: What can be done to stop that?

Dean: I've spoken to John Kerry about that, and he's going to have some legal teams in Florida."

This is a great idea. They are purging the rolls here now with no apologies and no hesitation.

17. Jeb does not seem happy about this group offering to monitor.

SNIP.."Press Release: Pax Christi USA Coordinator Rebuffs Governor Bush’s Criticism on Election Monitors
“Protecting the sanctity of every vote, the dignity of every voter is the motivation behind bringing international election monitors to Florida” says Robinson

Tallahassee, Fla. - Following criticism from Governor Jeb Bush, the national coordinator of Pax Christi USA said that “assuring the integrity of the election process” is the reason that his organization will be inviting international election monitors to Florida to oversee the 2004 presidential election.

“What I hope that Governor Bush understands is that the sanctity of every vote and the dignity of every voter is at the heart of our effort to make sure that the 2004 elections are conducted with the utmost integrity,” said Dave Robinson, national coordinator of Pax Christi USA, a national Catholic peace and justice organization.

After a press conference outside the Florida Supreme Court in which Pax Christi USA announced its plans to bring international election monitors to Florida, Governor Bush told members of the media that Pax Christi USA’s plans are “an organized effort to try to create doubt about our election system.”

3. What is the legal basis for this very discriminant purging...
...of voter roles? How is it that this is happening again? I live in Florida and I just can't understand how the law allows this sort of thing. It's the same with the republicans re-aligning voter districts they serve so that they can guarantee that their districts have a majority of republicans.

9. Better get some legal teams in California too.
There is no way the recall of Grey Davis and the installation of Armpit Shwollenpecker was legitimate.

10. I hope we have monitoring groups in the states that suffered intimidation.
There were so many complaints of dirty tricks and intimidation at many areas of the South last election. I would hope that the NAACP, who fielded many of the complaints last time would arrange for some sort of pre-emptive monitoring of poll sites.. as well as an educational campaign as to what will and will not happen at the polling places. Many, many new voters and non-native speaking voters were intimidated last time, or turned away. It was like the 60's all over again.

Personally, I think Howard Dean would do well on a weekly tv show or something... provided he had a bit of training.

14. how bad is it?
I've read some articles on the Help America Vote Act (HAVA) that seems like it will LEGALLY allow Bush to steal the election.

16. Ah, this part of the 2nd link is quite odd.
SNIP..."HAVA also contains some elements that should improve the election process greatly. The law mandates that voters be able to correct mistakes in their ballots, or to cast provisional ballots if their names do not appear on the registration list or if they do not have IDs. The law requires polling places to have at least one fully accessible and private voting machine for disabled voters, and machines that can perform in other langauges. Each state must create integrated, computerized, statewide voter registration lists. HAVA also dedicates federal funds for better training of poll workers and voter education....."

Don't some of the machines fail to verify your vote? I thought I heard that. Like you press your choice, but it does not give you a chance to say yes it is correct.
