Bush Approval Falls After Iraq Abuses, Pew Poll Says

May 12 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush's job approval rating fell to 44 percent from 48 percent in April, following revelations that U.S. soldiers abused Iraqi prisoners, a poll by the Pew Center for the People and the Press shows.

The percentage of Americans who think the nation is headed in the right direction is at 33 percent, an eight-year low, and 61 percent said they are dissatisfied with ``the way things are going in this country,'' the Pew survey said. In an election match-up, Democratic presidential rival John Kerry, a four-term Massachusetts senator, leads Bush by 50 percent to 45 percent.

4. Fundies. Hard-core base.
He'll always have around 30% of the vote for that reason alone I'm afraid.

6. There is always hope for a miricle that Bush falls to 10%
He is imploding faster than a speeding bullet and its now hopeless.

Even the House Speaker, Hassert, is grumbling big time. The Pub Rats in the House are distancing themselves trying to save the House from the Dems. No coattails in Bush as his skirts are caught in the escalators threads.

5. When do House and Senate Pub candidates panic?
And start putting distance between themselves and * over the war, gas prices, the deficit, etc.? There have to be some swing districts and states where pubbie candidates aren't going to want to be close to a guy with a 44% approval rating. Has Arlen Specter said anything about torturegate yet? Someone needs to ask him whether he thinks Rummy should resign. It would be fun to hear him hem and haw about it even if he doesn't say yes.

8. Bush's problems are fundamental.
He is merely reaping what he has sown.

His policies are wrong and reality is catching up with the rhetoric and showing it to be a lie. Regardless of how he tries to cloak his aims in lofty images polished to a deep glow by speechwriters, the underlying ugliness shines through for all to see.

As reality continues to intrude upon his rhetoric, I suspect that his approval numbers will continue to plummet. Look to the very best measure of an incumbent president: the right track/ wrong track polls. That is where elections are won and lost. His right track numbers are in the toilet while the wrong track numbers are tracking up directly reflecting the other.

9. This is good, but I'm afraid...

...that he might get 4-5% back because of the beheading. People cling to their leaders in these kinds of times. But who knows, maybe they'll see him as kind-of responsible.
