HOLY CRAP -- FreeRepublic vs. the Bergs -- TWO months ago
:wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow: :wow:

I will not engage in speculation of any kind. I'll simply quote from MaxSpeak:
This has come up in the comments section of MaxSpeak that is also mentioned in comments on Atrios and Whiskey Bar. As the implications are potentially extremely serious, I think it merits greater exposure even though the connections are, as far as I know, only circumstantial.

On March 7, 2004 an "enemies list" composed of signatories to an anti-war petition was posted on the Free Republic website. The introductory and subsequent comments on that list suggest that the purpose of the posting was to encourage people to harrass the individuals on the list and to circulate their names to agencies and individuals that might take action against them.

Nick Berg's father, Michael Berg was on that list and he named Prometheus Methods Tower Service, Inc. as an affiliation. According to his family on March 24, 2004 -- approximately two weeks after publication of the enemies list on the Free Republic website -- Nick Berg was detained by Iraqi police who handed him over to US forces, he was then held until April 6 when he was released, the day after his family had filed a lawsuit in Philadelphia federal court. Nick Berg was not heard from again after April 9.

19. They're not ashamed
read post 324, doug the Nazi gives his proclamation to the Salon reporter and the whole civilized world as to his so-called motives for posting the ememy list back in March- it's lengthy and I don't want to sully the DU pages so you'll have to venture there at your own peril.

21. Now claims that names were posted only to "mock them for being fools"
Why is it that these "truth"-loving, high-"moral" Amerika-uber-alles dupes are so afraid to stand fully accountable for their actions?

5. What's the problem?
Berg's father signs a petition - FreeRepublic tips off the Gestapo - problem solved!

That's the way our glorious Reich is designed to work.

= = =

FATHER Berg in the US was anti-war - he signed the petition - SON was pro-war - the son either got jailed for 13 days or didn't get jailed for 13 days under the Patriot Act and then got released the DAY AFTER the BERG VS RUMSFELD lawsuit was filed in the US - and then got bumped off by guys wearing hoods with strangely white hands and phony Arab accents.

Looks like the FR/FBI/CIA/CPA/RNC/AQ Mafia is humming along nicely.

7. This is disturbing, but some things don't mesh...
If the posting on FR was a catalyst, why would the killers go after this man because they found out that the man's father is against the same war they (the killers) are against? Isn't that biting off your nose to spite your face?

And if FR got the names from a list already on the web, I don't see how the FR rants/posts would be to blame. I mean ANSWER is just as well known as FR, at least it seems to me they are, and the names were on the ANSWER page first.

And are we assuming these killers read FR? I mean those guys are off in left field, yes...but it's not like they are a national resource or anything. Would terrorists ignore ANSWER's public notice of Mr. Berg's being anti-war...but act suddenly on a fanatical right's rants?

I'm just trying to make sense of this. A friend emailed me about the FR connection today, but the facts just don't add up as it being plausible.

I read today that Berg had no job and no protection, and that he was told he was in danger by the FBI and offered a "ride" home. I also read in the news that although he was detained as they tried to talk him into leaving, his father filed a lawsuit making them let him go....so they did. And that left him with no protection, and then he got killed.

I don't know. With all this, I can't help but feel like aside from the obvious blame of the fanatics who beheaded him, the only other responsibility for this lies with Berg himself - and the decisions he made.

22. No, it's not that it was a catalyst...
but I think it is perfectly possible that after Iraqi police turned Nick Berg over to the US military, they decided to keep him because his father was an anti-war activist, and thus he could be in Iraq 'helping terrorists' (using their logic).

The family claims that if he hadn't been held by the US, he would have been able to get out of Iraq before things got worse.

16. Excuse me?!?!?
You have a problem with thinking things out logically? Of drawing a conclusion based on all of the information available, rather than solely on partisan sentiment?

Do you treat all newcomers with such assinine behavior? You know, posts such as yours only exacerbate and support claims that those of us who are left-leaning are intolerant of any type of logical thinking based on facts, and true discussion of issues.

I was reading earlier the thread about veterans leaving this forum.

Now I know have an idea of why that might be happening.

13. Gives freepers more credit
than they deserve. They're too pathetic to be a key part of a greater conspiracy.

That's not saying that the idiots shouldn't be shamed for this.

14. My brother has speculated at length about this
on our joint blog this evening. I don't think he has come up with any actual new information, although he did make himself read the whole disgusting freep thread and there are a couple posts that claim that the information was forwarded to government and military officials. A decent read, if you lean towards CT's:

Just wondering. I mean I disagree with you guys %110 percent BUT id never infringe on your right to speak no matter how stupid it is. And the man who's son was subjected to one of the most horrific acts of violence I've ever seen was on the list. And guess what? Not much remorse from those nutcases over at free republic. ..Interesting. ..

Yes, call the guy's boss. Brilliant. Another great example of conservative hypocrisy. Why do you hate freedom of speech?
Calling the guy's boss *is* freedom of speech.
