Comment overheard in staff lounge today as I was exiting. Young man (likely of draft age) was asking if others if they saw the video of Berg and he said it was about time we took decisive action.

It just turns my stomach when I hear comments like that.

But, when somebody's thinking is so simplistic and black-and-white, what would be some effective arguments. How do you reach people like that? Or, are they simply beyond hope.

1. I have come to the conclusion that people that think we can/should

"kill them ALL!" or "nuke the whole damn Middle East" are so out of touch, lacking in character and morally bankrupt that they can't be reasoned with.

The people they want are in every country, including ours. The 9/11 hijackers lived here and went to flight school, how would nuking the middle east have stopped that?

5. Part of it is the viscreal reaction

I mean a couple of days after 9/11 I had a couple of thoughts along that line; but then I came to my senses. When you see something horrific it's a natural reaction. Not that it's the best reaction or that every body reacts the same way. But it is a natural reaction.

if that's all it is, eventually he'll come to his senses and ask the obvious questions ("If we nuke innocents how exactly are we better than them?" "Who precisely do you want us to nuke?" and so on.)

Of course it's also possible that he is full of hate and right wing propoganda, in which case it's more difficult. And less likely he will come to his senses.

...who things we should bomb all Arabs into dust, and who happens to be Jewish. I avoided comparing the genocide she advocated to the Holocaust because that was hitting below the belt. Instead referenced what this country has done to Native Americans over the centuries.

Also have concluded that there is no reasoning with this kind of mindset.

One idiot blabbing this kind of drivel, and another seemingly nice guy who's only fault was that he couldn't tell the other fella to shut up by judging the look on the second guy's face.

Heard it in my workplace yesterday. I tried to explain that most of the people there are just like the rest of us, they just want to go about there lives with some kind of peace. I'm sure they would rather be holding down a job and raising there families rather than deal with all the crap that is going on there. This co-worker did agree that was probably true.

17. Unfortunately, I have to live with my husband saying this

all the time. I get him calmed down sometimes but he'll say it, then I'll give him the "look", then he'll turn around and says we shouldn't be there in the first place to appease me. He is a Vietnam vet and says he doesn't want the same thing to happen as in Vietnam and has always said they couldn't ever do anything to win because we were always afraid of China. He agrees Iraq is a mistake and wonders why the stupid administration doesn't go after Pakistan or Saudi Arabia. Then he answers himself by saying it's because Pakistan has the nuclear capability and we have too much interest in Saudi oil. I get very tired of hearing his primal instincts to "nuke them all" but i have to live with it!!
