U.S. Denies Holding Beheading Victim Berg
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=1&u=/ap/20040512/ap_on_re_mi_ea/iraq (snip) Berg, who was Jewish, spoke to his parents March 24 and told them he would return home on March 30, according to his family in suburban Philadelphia. But Berg was detained by Iraqi police at a checkpoint in Mosul on March 24, was turned over to U.S. officials and detained for 13 days, the family said. His father, Michael, said his son was not allowed to make phone calls or contact a lawyer. Coalition spokesman Dan Senor told reporters that Berg was detained by Iraqi police in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. The Iraqis informed the Americans, and the FBI (news - web sites) questioned him three times about what he was doing in Iraq. Senor said that to his knowledge Berg "was at no time under the jurisdiction or detention of coalition forces." Michael Berg told The Associated Press, however, that U.S. officials were "playing word games." "The Iraqi police do not tell the FBI what to do. The FBI tells the Iraqi police what to do. Who do they think they're kidding?" the elder Berg said. Calls by the AP to police in Mosul failed to find anyone who could confirm Berg was held there. The U.S.-led Coalition Provisional Authority runs Iraq, controlling not only the police, but the military and all government ministries. FBI agents visited Berg's parents March 31 and told the family they were trying to confirm their son's identity. On April 5, the Bergs filed suit in federal court in Philadelphia, contending their son was being held illegally by the U.S. military. The next day, Berg was released. He told his parents he had not been mistreated. So, to recap...The Coalition didn't detain him, the Iraqi Police (who are controlled by the coalition) did, even though no one at the police station could remember Berg had been held there for 13 days. Sorry, a'int buying it. Edit: fixin' things |

6. I think they have absolutely no fucking fear of being called out on this. |
Edited on Wed May-12-04 03:15 PM by Minstrel Boy
By anybody but us, that is. And they don't give a shit what we may suspect. (On edit: come to think of it, our suspicions, which we can't do a damn thing about, may actually amuse them.)
This thing not only stinks, but it's sloppy as hell. It's like they're getting lazy, because they know nobody in the mainstream press is going to hound them. The more horrific the crime, the more likely they are of getting away with it. |

10. You got it exactly! |
The more attrocious the crime, the more credible they come across when they deny it. They rely on the story being too farfetched for anyone to believe they were involved. They truly take complete advantage of the American goodness.

16. Fascinating... |
.... some of these documents are off the server, others are not.
For those who don't understand what is going on: robots.txt is a file you place on your web server to tell search engine (Google, Yahoo, etc) spiders (robot programs that "index" the web) what and what not to spider. All of the "disallow" entries are for documents that will not be indexed by the spiders, and consequently won't appear in Google (or other SEs) searches. |

13. the simple fact that they feel the need to deny it is damning as hell |
"No, we weren't holding him! Whoever said that we were holding him! Well it wasn't us, really. It was those guys that we hired and trained and who we're paying. You know, those guys over there with the leftover US Army fatigues on who don't speak English. Those guys. Yeah. Ask them! Oh, you don't speak Arabic?"

17. How stupid we are? |
From the above article:
"The video posted Tuesday showed a bound Berg in an orange jumpsuit — similar to those issued to prisoners held by the American military at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba." |
