Proof of governmental influence on reporting
Edited on Wed May-12-04 12:59 AM by BullGooseLoony
I took this "quote" from the story about the killing of Nick Berg, who was beheaded by Iraqi "insurgents" in response to the abuses of Iraqi prisoners:

"'For the mothers and wives of American soldiers, we tell you that we offered the U.S. administration to exchange this **HOSTAGE** for some of the **DETAINEES** in Abu Ghraib and they refused,' one of the men read from a statement."

Now, do you think, if translated correctly, that translation would have accurately reflected the statement of Berg's killers? Do you think they would have used the word "hostage," especially in relation to the use of frickin' "DETAINEES" in reference to the Iraqi prisoners that we're holding, on the other side? I don't THINK so.

I realize I'm nitpicking here, but the media manipulates us in very subtle ways, and I feel that a quote distortion like this is an excellent example of it.

On edit: BTW I found this exact quote (in basically the same article) in articles reporting what happened on both Yahoo and AOL.

1. I have heard two different things
about the guys on the tape...first I heard that they were "Iraqi Insurgents...then I have heard that it's Al-Qaeda...I also heard on newscaster on the local fox station refer to him as a contractor working in Iraq...I thought he was in Iraq "looking" for work...

who knows man...they sure are spinning it...

shame though...really is a shame...he was so young...

2. From what I've read
He was the owner of a company that had some interest in technology (cell phone towers) that needed to be refurbished or replaced in Iraq.
He supposedly called back to the U.S. daily and talked to the "higher ups" in his company every day. He hoped to secure a contract for rebuilding "infrastructure" in Iraq.
My understanding , he was not "looking for a job", he was trying to secure business for his company.
