I'd like to suggest a new acronym, in light of today's rampant conspiracy
theories about aliens, torture, Joe Lieberman, the candidates for VP, "white" Muslims, and Rush Limbaugh's involvement in all of the above.

Did I miss any?

Anyway, in the spirit of LIHOP, SNAFU, and FUBAR, I present:

WASFI - what a stupid fucking idea!

Enjoy. Use wisely.

2. WASFI
Hey, that felt good. Yeah, telling someone to keep their ideas to themself is great.

Look, this is a horrible event. People are going to react to it in a number of ways. To suggest that they should not express their anger in their own way or seek answers in their own way is just useless. It solves nothing and disconnects us from one another. Bad idea. No its WASFI.

12. I'm mainly referring to the completely over-the-top theories that have
sprung up on DU and elsewhere in the past couple of days.

I mean, come on, insinuating that because Berg's killers "look" white (read: American) that this must absolutely be some big CIA conspiracy seems a little silly, don't you think?

16. Maybe its grief
I understand the reaction to it. But this is a very powerful thing we are dealing with. Its going to impact people in different ways.

19. Agreed.
As I've said elsewhere, these experiences are out of the realm of normal human experiences, so the brain tries to process them. When the brain refuses to accept them at face value, it looks for alternative explanations. Boom, a conspiracy theory is hatched.

In some ways, it's easier to explain away something as abhorrent as what happened today with a neat, clean theory, because the alternative is to accept it at face value. An American lost his life because of our arrogant President and his bullshit policies. A group of people killed an American in retaliation for what our soldiers did in Iraqi prisons.

What I honestly do not understand, however, is why everything has to be a conspiracy. Maybe I'm just too straightforward in my opinion of this, but it seems pretty likely to me that the CIA wasn't involved and that this isn't a bunch of "white guys", as the theory goes, dressed up to look like Iraqis. That explanation just seems ludicrous and contrived.

21. More of the former and less of the latter.
I don't expect people to shut up, because they have the right to say anything they want to. I encourage that.

They should not be surprised, however, if someone else expresses an opinion that their particularly ridiculous conspiracy theory is just that - ridiculous. That's my somewhat tongue-in-cheek point.

17. How is it out there in La La Land these days,.....
I certainly used to enjoy my tenure of blissful ignorance. Yep, those were the good old days, til I discovered that everything that our "partisan" government and the corporate whore media world told me everyday was the glorified truth.

Sink in and get comfortable in the knowledge that everything you hear on CNN is true, it gets too complicated for most people after they realize they've been scammed.

I've been wrestling with myself over and over about who I should believe, my lying eyes or the truth. It's been the most rude awakening I've ever experienced, but I'll take a few sleepless nights over buying into the mindless media blurbs bombarded at me daily by the corporate media whores on my TV set.

Sleep well, I know you will... dreaming about a Kerry victory in November, I just hope you aren't awakened by a nightmare...

18. Ah, yes, and anyone who doesn't buy into every conspiracy theory
is in "La La Land".

Perhaps some of us are just a little less gullible than others.

Sorry, but I don't buy into every bullshit story that crosses my path. The "fact" spouted on DU today that the people who brutally murdered Berg were CIA plants, for example, is just about the dumbest idea I've ever heard of. If you believe that, you're even more detached from reality than you claim I am.

Call me ignorant (oh, wait...you already did), but I think it is just as ignorant to try to blow off something as abhorent as a beheading with some ludicrous theory that is inexplicably stupid.

They fucking killed him, ok? They cut off his head in retaliation for what Bush and his minions have done in Iraq.

It doesn't take a goddamn brain surgeon to see who did this and why. It's not the CIA. It's not a bunch of Americans dressed up to look like Muslims. This is the real deal, folks.

Covering up reality with some asinine theory that completely ignores the fucking obvious reality of the situation is nothing other than a defense mechanism intended to keep peoples' minds from absorbing the complete and utter despair of the situation.

I see reality. Do you? Let me suggest that you take your "I know better than you" self-righteous bullshit somewhere else.

22. Yeah, well. I probably overreacted to being called out in a thread that
is obviously meant to be a joke.

I find it a little ridiculous that someone would use a thread like this, with no other basis whatsoever, to submit a post like that.

So, I responded in kind.

What was Nick Berg doing in Iraq looking for a job on his own? What do you do? Chances are somebody in Iraq would need your goods and services and if they did, would you not contact somebody here in the states for the application and go thru the proper channels to land a job and check out if there are any assurances that you would be half way safe while trying to make your fortune?

Would you high tail it over there on your own, and if you did and got waylaid on this venture to strike it rich in Iraq by getting stopped by Iraqi police and then turned over to the Americans for interrogation for 13 days, do you not think you could be somewhat convincing to them that you're some idiot that meant well, but just wants to go home now? Then would it not occur to you that your own country would not make sure you got some safe passage even if you are some kind of idiot for going over there on your own in the first place? THINK ABOUT ITT!!!

You needn't attack me for thinking out loud and not believing everything the bush* admin and the corporate owned media tells me.
