Contact Sen. Inhofe (R) and demand a retraction of torture comments!!!
Edited on Tue May-11-04 10:00 PM by JohnLocke
From GOP senator labels abused prisoners "terrorists" (May 11th, CNN):
----
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A Republican member of the Senate Armed Services Committee dismissed Tuesday the outrage over the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by U.S. troops, saying Iraqis depicted in widely broadcast photographs probably had "blood on their hands."
"I'm probably not the only one up at this table that is more outraged by the outrage than we are by the treatment," Sen. James Inhofe said during a hearing on the Abu Ghraib prison scandal.
The Iraqis held in the section of the prison where the abuse occurred "are not there for traffic violations," he said.
"If they're in cell block 1A or 1B, these prisoners -- they're murderers, they're terrorists, they're insurgents,"
said Inhofe, a conservative from Oklahoma. "Many of them probably have American blood on their hands. And here we're so concerned about the treatment of those individuals."

----
From Red Cross: Iraq Abuse Widespread, Routine (May 10th, ABC):
----
Up to 90 percent of Iraqi detainees were arrested "by mistake," according to coalition intelligence officers cited in a Red Cross report disclosed Monday. It also says U.S. officers mistreated inmates at the notorious Abu Ghraib prison by keeping them naked in dark, empty cells.
(...)
The report says some coalition military intelligence officers estimated "between 70 percent and 90 percent" of the detainees in Iraq "had been arrested by mistake. They also attributed the brutality of some arrests to the lack of proper supervision of battle group units."
(...)
"Authorities entered houses usually after dark, breaking down doors, waking up residents roughly, yelling orders, forcing family members into one room under military guard while searching the rest of the house and further breaking doors, cabinets and other property," the report says.
(...)
It was unclear what the Red Cross meant by "mistake." However, many Iraqis have claimed U.S. forces arrested them because of misunderstandings, bogus claims by personal enemies, mistaken identity or simply for being at the wrong place at the wrong time.
One former detainee who claims he was abused, Haider Sabbar Abed, said he was arrested in July when the driver of the car he was in was unable to produce proper papers at a U.S. checkpoint. He was not released until April 15.
In one operation, U.S. special operations troops detained nearly the entire male population of the village of Habbariyah, ranging in age from 81 to 13, apparently to prevent terrorists from slipping across the border from Saudi Arabia. The 79 men were held for weeks.

Contact Senator Idiot -- er, Inhofe -- and tell him what you think:

1. My E-mail To Inhofe
"You Are A Disgrace To Oklahoma And Our Country

Your statements and implications that Americans should not be outraged by the treatment of prisoners in Abu Ghraib, simply because Hussein treated prisoners worse, clearly demonstrate that you lack the moral clarity to understand why we are better than Hussein. It appears that you would be quite comfortable with us being more like him than not. That is sick.

In addition, you are lying when you characterize mistreated prisoners as "murderers" and "terrorists." You have no idea what crimes, if any, were committed by the tortured prisoners. You do know that the U.S. military advised the International Red Cross that ninety percent of the prisoners were arrested by mistake, don't you? Of course you don't. You are ignorant.

Finally, your cowardly, ad hominem attack on Senator Kennedy while appearing on MSNBC only further confirms that you are not fit to serve in the United States Senate. You have zero leadership qualities. You are not a statesman. You are not a gentleman. You are incompetent, and little more than a political hack.

I urge you to resign and seek professional counseling.

(My name)"

19. my submission
You do not represent me or the United States of America by your comments. You have no idea what crimes, if any, were committed by the abused or tortured prisoners. You do know that the U.S. military advised the International Red Cross that 90% of the prisoners were arrested by mistake.

Finally, your attack on Senator Kennedy while appearing on MSNBC only further confirms that you are not above politicizing issues that you accuse others of doing. You are not my statesman. You are not a gentleman. And you will never receive a vote from me. In fact, I will be working for those who oppose you so that you no longer have the opportunity to represent my or other Oklahomans interests at the federal level. I think you should be ashamed of yourself.

14. McCain was on Larry King and offered an explanation
He said that a man his age has to go to the men's room often and that was the only reason.

Are we hiring murderers, terrorists and insurgents? I'll email him but I'm not from his state.

17. Here's what I just wrote:
Your statements at the Taguba testimony are despicable, unprofessional, and un-American. You are playing politics with the tragedy of the Iraq War, and the torture of prisoners at our hands, going close enough to justify what we did. You, sir, are a disgrace to your party, to the Senate, and to the country. I can only hope your constituents will correct their mistake when you run for re-election.

23. I called his office this morning (TOLL FREE, see my sig line)
and said I was from California and had already called my people about this, and that I was SO glad I'm not in Oklahoma, and unlucky enough to have him as my senator. I said his statements were completely inexcusable, and suggested he consult the multiple Red Cross reports about the prison, including the parts that talk about how 70 to as much as 90 percent of the people incarcerated in Abu Ghraib were INNOCENT. NON-COMBATANTS, who'd been rounded up, merely at the wrong place at the wrong time. The staffer hemmed and hawed and said something lame like - "well, we haven't seen that, I'm not sure what it says." LIKE HELL YOU'RE NOT!?!?!??!

27. I agree...
.... the reich wing is showing its true colors. Sure, there is the core 30% idiot contingent who agree with them, but you can't win an election with 30%.

The more these bozos try to minimize this, the more they say idiotic things like "well at least we're not as bad as (the devil)", the more swing voters will come our way.

Keep spilling your repugnant thoughts Mr. Inhofe. Just let it all out.
