If Rumsfeld resigned, who would replace him?
We may feel like celebrating if he leaves, but he would likely only be replaced by somebody with equally misguided neo-con philosophy. Remember this is an election year, so his replacement would likely be somebody about whom we know very little, so as not to stir up controversy. Hence, I don't see Wolfowitz getting the job.

2. Deputy Sec of Defense Paul Wolfowitz

would automatically get the job until a new Secretary could be selected, vetted on approved by the Senate. It could take months.

"Hold on Rummy, for dear life!"

7. It has always been my hunch that Howard Baker took himself out of
the running for the Presidency to save the Reagan Administration. Just an unconfirmed hunch, mind you. If ever another Republican presidency were in jeopardy, would Baker be back in the fore?

8. I believe the position of NSC director does not require Senate
confirmation. If that's correct, you have it. They'll be able to get Condi through the Senate, narrowly, and stick Wolf at NSC.

Whoever said it, probably knows what they're talking about.

9. This scares me
Considering who the Senate just let in... would they stop someone worse than Rummy? I doubt it... We can't afford the negative press for a filibuster of fascists before the election. It could be they want rummy out for someone more evil and competent.

the USA has been royally screwed by Bush's regime.

They all need to be replaced.
One is just as corrupt as the next.

12. Levin: that is why he is not pushing for Rumsfeld to leave. What
comes after Rumsfeld could be worse. He said "will it represent real change?" because he wanted to be polite.

16. It wouldn't be Wolfowitz
Wolfowitz has his paw prints all over this torture debacle as well. CBS 60 Minutes showed photos of Wolfowitz visiting Abu Ghraib last summer. The same stain that now tarnishes the administration with Rumsfeld in place would simply be transferred to Rumsfeld's second-in-command. The controversy would not go away in time for the election, if Rumsfeld leaves only to be replaced by someone even more controversial, who generates even more animosity and who is a more outspoken and unapologetic hawk. I think that in fact, if Rumsfeld were to "resign", it would have to be preceded by the resignation of Wolfowitz, in order that they can put someone else completely new into the position. Therefore, I would keep my eye on Wolfowitz. If he looks about to resign, it will announce the imminent departure of Rumpy as well.
