Cheyney grads snub Santorum
Appears he was ready for this to happen, but went right along.

By KATHLEEN E. CAREY kcarey@delcotimes.com THORNBURY --

Dissatisfied with their school’s choice of commencement speaker, about half of Saturday’s graduating class at Cheyney University rebuffed U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., by standing and turning their backs to him during his speech.

Just as Santorum began his address, dozens of the 324 graduates stood and faced the audience. One graduate left the area. Many in the crowd applauded the students’ actions.
-snip-
As he finished, a man in the crowd cried, "Get off the stage!"

1. He's such a buffoon
He did everything but say "you people" to the predominantly African American grads. THey heckled him the whole time he was onstage and he still didn't get a clue.

Editorial: Cheyney students’ attentiveness refreshing

04/19/2004

For the second time in as many years, local college students have called into question the wisdom of having a commencement speaker who does not represent their ideals.
Last year when U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., spoke at St. Joseph University’s graduation in Philadelphia, about 100 people stood up and walked out because of his stand on homosexuality.

-snip-

But his offensive remarks about gays and lesbians were so egregious that even his fellow Republicans were appalled and were quick to attempt some damage control a few weeks later.

-snip-
The fact that the students are paying attention to a legislator’s performance in Washington, and that they are willing to make him accountable for his actions, is refreshing. It is also encouraging to know that a generation is emerging that is willing to get involved and not just settle for whatever is spit out by a political machine, Democratic or Republican.

While the students may feel frustrated at their efforts to unseat Santorum as their commencement speaker, they should remember that they will have an opportunity to unseat him from the U.S. Senate in 2006. And there is probably no more powerful tool of political protest than a vote.

35. Another report...
While most of the master's degree candidates remained seated during Santorum's speech, more than half of the graduating undergraduates stood and faced away from the senator in silent protest, the paper reported. A scattering of audience members also joined the protest.
-snip-
The quiet protest turned to a chorus of boos and jeers at several points, particularly when Santorum focused on family values and the percentage of black children born out of wedlock, the paper reported.

The boos rose to a roar when Santorum quoted National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, and remained loud through his finishing comment of "Thank you and God bless you."

did his speech have to do with graduation, graduating and all the mushy "going out in the world" crap? it sounded more like some sort of re-election speech or "republican talking points."

is cheyney a Traditionally Black University? (question answered in a previous post) and who was the moran that picked him for commencement speaker?

Yes, it's an African American university and this moran delivers a speech talking about single-mother households and crime rates...:dunce:

I heard a rumor that former Penn president Judy Rodin might run against him in the repub primary in 2006. I have no love lost for Judy "sweatshops are dandy" Rodin but I'd put up with a lot to see the end of RS.

15. Great to know that our young voters are wise and will not be hobbled by
the slime of the GOP. More power to Howard Dean for his approach to involve the college age and Kerry for taking a cue from Dean.

george's stain will be on this next generation also, as well as their children

Maybe a better world will evolve from their efforts.
Congrats to all who refuse to be dumbed down by the Neocons.

36. Santorum
spoke at LaRoche College in Pittsburgh a few years ago and pointed out the reason Columbine happened was because the mothers of the two kids worked outside of the home.

Quite a few of the parents left after this comment, but it was nothing like this.

Can't wait to see how Jon Stewart handles this tonight.
