Pictures of the Torturers
The people doing the actual torturing are guilty and must be punished, but let's not forget who is ultimately responsible for all the wrongdoing in Iraq, from the thousands of civilian dead and wounded to our own casualties and yes, the torture of Iraqi civilians:

1. Now, now, remember that they are 'wrongdoers', not 'evildoers',
now doesn't that make you feel better? * used exactly that description of the criminals that posed in the photos. I was so glad to hear that they weren't evildoers, whew, what a load off my tiny mind!

9. let's be honest with ourselves....

Those pictures should include members of every administration since Eisenhower's, at the very least. Abu Ghraib is just the tip of an iceberg with deep historical roots.

on edit: I'm somewhat uncomfortable including Carter's administration in that cabal, but it's unfortunately true that despite his personal goodness, Carter did not root out the evil that had already taken firm control of U.S. foreign policy.

11. Not to sound like a Polyanna, but I tend to think...
that Carter was hamstrung from the time he assumed office. The 'October surprise' as orchestrated by * Sr. was just the tip of the iceberg.

13. I agree....
He was also isolated from foreign policy revision, to a great extent, by the events in Iran, which kept the focus solidly on the hostages and during which attention was diverted away from any U.S. responsibility for that crisis.

12. True, Mike
I sometimes feel out of place here at the DU when I hear people talking as if these sort of things have never happened before and will never happen again as soon as we vote these pukes out of office.
These sort of horrors have gone on far longer than a lot of people here seem to be aware. There are reports of abuses like this from most every country our military has been in for any significant amount of time. This really is systemic, but more so than some realize. It's not systemic to the Iraqi war, but to the American Government as a whole. They have always behaved outside our own country as though America is above the law.
