This is the start of a long paen to Reagan at free republic. (The whole article is interesting as an example of a complete world view--extremely anti-liberal; the quote from M Thatcher is something else.)

A Shining City on a Hill:
A tribute to Ronald Reagan
He was the greatest president of my lifetime, perhaps the greatest of all time. He loved his country at a time when patriotism was passé. He tended the sacred fire of liberty through the long dark night of collectivism and ignited bonfires of freedom across the globe. He stood up to an evil empire that murdered and enslaved countless millions and swept it into the dustbin of history. He “turned the tide of history away from totalitarian darkness and into the warm sunlight of human freedom”. He imagined America as a shining city on a hill and a beacon of hope to oppressed peoples everywhere.

much more.....

3. My tribute to Ronald Wilson Reagan
He taught me that ketchup was a vegetable and that trees cause air pollution.

He taught me that tax cuts for the wealthy and increased spending on the military leads to a balanced budget.

He increased the national debt by 189% in only 8 years.

He hated people of color and stated that he would not have voted for either the Civil Rights or Voting Rights act.

He illegally sold arms to an enemy nation and used the proceeds to illegally fund the Nicaraguan contra army.

He supported Saddam Hussein diplomatically and materially for 8 years and gave him the means and knowledge to create chemical and biological weapons.

5. Shining city

Hmmm, sounds like the Emerald City in The Wizard of OZ. It's real pretty as long as you don't pay attention to the man behind the curtain.

7. The statements posted are regardless of history...
Edited on Sun May-09-04 01:05 AM by FDRrocks
The Soviet Union self imploded via perestroika, all due to thier own history of brutality.

Reagan had no more to do with it... in fact MUCH LESS to do with it, than even Truman did.

On top of it all he moved this country ever so closer to corrupt politics and fascism than any single politician with a lasting impact has.

8. Hamlet Act V. Scene 2
Edited on Sun May-09-04 01:17 AM by flaminbats
Sir, in my heart there was a kind of fighting,
That would not let me sleep: methought I lay
Worse than the mutines in the bilboes. Rashly,
And praised be rashness for it, let us know
Our indiscretion sometimes serves us well
When our deep plots do pall; and that should learn us
There's a divinity that shapes our ends,
Rough-hew them how we will.

O royal knavery! an exact command,
Larded with many several sorts of reasons,
Importing Denmark's health and England's too,
With, ho! such bugs and goblins in my life,
That, on the supervise, on no leisure bated,
No, not to stay grinding the axe,
My head should be struck off.

9. That's the new the stupidest thing I've ever read
Imagine what it would be like to feel that way about someone you've never met - a goofy old B-movie actor, no less. How incredibly hokey and sad.
