Editor, Times-Dispatch: I may be more like an adolescent male than I'd like to admit (I am actually a 22-year-old woman), but I have always been deeply moved by war movies. Most recently after seeing the last of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, I was struck with the realization that the worlds portrayed in even the most fictitious movies are always based on our own. So, I thought dreamily, where are the orcs?
Well, on April 25 in Washington, I found them - all 600,000 of them: marching, snarling, screaming, writhing orcs. The "March for Women's Lives" was a horrific mass display of the basest of human conditions.
The little band of pro-life counter-protesters consisted of about 1,200 of us. We lined the sidewalks on either side of Pennsylvania Avenue, holding our signs, some in silence, some praying, some shouting back. Our presence enraged the marchers to such an extent that they screamed obscenities, thrust bare chests and obscene gestures in our faces, threatened us physically, and worked themselves into such frothy fits I was surprised they could march for even eight blocks. I'm not going to lie: It was scary, especially because I was on a rather sparse block, with one counter-protester every 50 feet or so. At any given moment I was surrounded by tangible hate manifested by what had become caricatures of men and women.
Citizens, this is the battle of Helm's Deep. The abortion issue is far more important than we have dared consider. One day some may wake up and find that through their apathy they have allowed the murder of millions of children. Some day, they may wake up an orc.
