WANA, Pakistan - Pakistani authorities held last-ditch talks with tribal allies of Al Qaeda militants on Saturday to convince foreign fighters to register with the authorities, as a deadline for them to do so passed.
A senior government official ruled out the possibility of extending the deadline again after it expired overnight, although not a single foreign militant has come forward to register.
“We are not going to extend the deadline further,” said Mahmood Shah, security chief of the tribal region where hundreds of Al Qaeda and Taleban fighters are believed to be holed up.
Pakistan military spokesman Shaukat Sultan said on Friday the government might use force again to hunt down foreign militants in the tribal region near the Afghan border.
