I see building supplies have gone up. All fuel/oil/diesel prices are up. Airline tickets have gone up.

No inflation??

Hows that work?

6. It is sad
so many unemployed or working for so little, now prices go up, and they will raise interest rates. We need more cannon fodder, cant do the draft thing before the election.

who measure inflation haven't read the tea leaves right. Anytime gas/fuel go up, everything from soup to nuts increase in price cause everything is shipped in trucks/planes/boats that run on...you guessed it...gas. The cost of shipping is factored in to the price at every store in the nation.

3. Long story short
Bush's ridiculous tax cuts favoring the wealthiest fail to create necessary purchasing power for middle class and lower + horrible deficit = weak dollar = rise in inflation = higher prices.

The rise in gas prices due to the weak dollar is also a factor as the previous fellow said.

4. Inflation is intentionally falsely mainpulated...

It uses insane measurements like the price of bread and other crap....they cook the books. It ties into interest rates and other crap so they would say it's for the greater good that inflation is lied about.

But we all know when prices are up. When it costs more to transport goods, the goods cost more...bottom line.

5. My grocery bill has jumped
at least $40 a week since last year at this time. I am assuming some of it must have to do with the price of oil/gas, since food is trucked to grocery stores.

I'm paying over $3.60 just for half a gallon of soy-milk. Amazing!!

12. Though I hated to, I had to give up organic dairy products...
When you're paying six times as much for milk to get something organic, you have to face facts. Our grocery bill is so high now.. we have to shop at Costco. Though you don't necessarily save more there item for item, we save because we buy large quantities of staple goods. When it comes time to cook, we have everything we need to make lower cost meals.. as opposed to running to the store to buy "one thing" and coming out 30 dollars later.

The Bush folks are manipulating things somehow to mask inflation.. I suppose as long as we can buy 5 dollar shoes at Walmart, it evens things out.. that's all I can guess. Does this Bush era remind anyone of the 70's perhaps??

18. I'll cut out other stuff
before I'll cut out organic foods. I know it's expensive (DAMN the milk is high and $5 a pound for butter, but fortunately we don't use much of that!) but I know too much about what's in the nonorganic stuff to go back.

Plus I like knowing I am supporting the organic farmers, God knows they need it.

Is there anywhere else in your budget you could cut back?

Just a suggestion, not trying to meddle or anything! ;-)

13. I'm amazed too.... that anyone would pay that for soy milk *grin*
No, really. Soy makes me all kinds of sick... allergy. (don't ask how I eat. It sucks. I can do fermented soy, so tamari is okay.) ...

But yes, rice milk is up, too. Thinking I'm going to have to find a rice milk recipe.

I feel your pain. Even if I can't drink it.

Pcat

Edited on Sat May-08-04 09:56 PM by paxmusa
but now I love the stuff!

Because it's so expensive, I'm using less of it these days.

I've never tried rice milk--hey, if its cheaper than soy, I might give it a try!!

25. Mine too
paid 2.99 for a bag of baby spinach today. I wanted raspberries, but they were 3.99 for a tiny box, so I had to pass.

My next home (if I can afford one) will have some land for a garden, dammit!

26. you are right, (but soy products are a scam)
transportation costs are a killer here. But petrochemical fertilizers are a factor. And if you buy vaseline or prescription ointments, their prices will also go up because they too use oil. Freshly squeezed oil.

Everything with soy in it (bogus burgers, 1oz chips, etc) cost a King's ransom. It's all profiteering from a niche group of 'walking wallets', so therefore it's going to cost more. :-(

16. Well, folks, we gotta give it a different name.
I figured we were being lied to.

If this is not inflation, then it's "prices gettin' higher".

If they will not let us use the correct word, substitute another one.

And talk about it.

Prices stay the same then jump by 17% at a clip.
Except wages. They go nowhere.

19. Yep, we've noticed
milk prices jumped up in just a day. I heard it was coming, but it was still a bit shocking.

I am clipping coupons more than ever and shopping where they triple them. I also combine them with sales and plan my weeks' meals around the loss leaders (the big sales items on the front page of the flyer that they are actually losing money on to get you in the store where you will buy other, higher-priced items).

21. Milk prices-simple answer
For some reason, Monsanto cut back production of BST (also known as BGH-bovine growth hormone) by 50%. We go from a milk surplus to a shortage overnight.

Monsanto blames it on quality control issues at their primary production plant. Somehow, this doesn't seem like them, wondering if there is something coming down re: BST and human health.

Organic good, BST bad. Just remind yourself of that when you pay an extra buck or two.

22. Yep yep yep yep yep
I read an article on it.

We have been shunning all non-organic dairy for YEARS because of BST, cattle antibiotics, herbicides, pesticides and fungicides in their feed and the traces of PUS and BLOOD that have been found in non-organic milk. ICK.

Organic prices didn't go up because they don't use BST. They are high enough as it is! ($5 a gallon on sale here.)

24. No doubt it cost more to prodcue milk without BST
BST increases production by a lot, and since its not organic, antibiotics can be used as well.

The question for all of us is whether we are willing to pay a little more, not only for personal health reasons, but to support the concept of sustainable agriculture.

Support for your organic growers will promote better and more beneficial farming practices.

We all need to do more than give these concepts lip service, and put our money where our mouth is.
