US powerless to halt Iraq net images

Last year's US-led war in Iraq presented a showcase for the Pentagon's superior military technology - but as the occupation drags on, gadgetry is increasingly showing another side of the American armed forces.

By Robert Plummer
BBC News Online

When the shocking images depicting the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by US troops began to surface, it became clear that many of them were amateur pictures, apparently taken by soldiers using their own private digital cameras.

/snip/

"Certainly one of the issues that might be looked into is the use of digital cameras and whether or not any policy might be desirable," says US Central Command's Lt Cdr Balice.

"But if there's some kind of thought that we might introduce a policy because we fear that wrongdoing might be exposed, then that is incorrect. In any case, the photographing of detainees is prohibited."

"if there's some kind of thought that we might introduce a policy because we fear that wrongdoing might be exposed, then that is incorrect"

Now why would they feel the need to say something like that?

hmmmmm :freak:

3. I know, . . KBR cut off TOTAL private internet communications
.
.
.

That'll just raise the stress level of those far away from home that much more.

and create MORE craziness.

I truly believe that some of the soldiers over there are only hanging on to their sanity by that thin thread of communication back home . .

now it's gone . .

Lord help us all

2. Let them keep the cameras
America's egoistic hedonistic behavior will only allow this sort of depravity to continue. Having pictures only continues to help spell out the truth about our country.

It's going to be years before I trust the military again, and NEVER under the rule of the repukes. The last 3.4 years have been atrocious and 9/11 LIHOP has been confirmed, with MIHOP not beyond a reasonable doubt. The "people" in office scare the shit out of me, as it has for most of us...

6. How surprised Rummy must have been.
This man, who they say is incredibly rigid and did not see this coming, could not have imagined that his current crop of GI's would be snapping pictures left and right, "trophies" of their conquests.

What a shock to now have them exploding in his face, as he sits in front of Congress to answer the obvious. Thank god for digital cameras. And yes, he will probably ban them now. A little too late, perhaps?

He's defnitely a man from the 70's.

7. I have seriously considered...
Mailing disposable cameras in care packets. It would help everyone stay informed as to the real situation in Iraq.

8. they were on the list ..
for care packages. Tell them don't take them to WallyMal or Walgreens for developing.

Don't have link just now, but did read earlier that the military is frantically trying to confiscate as many pics, cds, laptops, etc. that they can right now. That's one reason they cannot predict what is going to be released. They're just not sure what's out there.

9. pictures of detainees are prohibited..which is why the pictures alone
prove guilt...
