Keeping people poor keeps us safe?
A recent Salt Lake Tribune editorial by a Chicago columnist opposes a draft because, "today's military is far superior to the conscriptid forces of the past." As a rational for supporting a military in which he acknowledges that, "rural whites and minorities serve disproportionatly" in the Bush war. He submits that it, "also indicates that the military is offering opportunities to people who need them."

Let's see, we need rural whites and minorities to risk their lives while the rest of us watch on TV in order to have a superior military. This is a candid admition that the US requires continued disparity between the haves and the have-nots in order for the rest of us to be safe at home. "Let 'em eat cake," right?

are you saying that they want to keep the populous poor so they'll more readily turn to the military as a source of income?

2. Institutionalized economic disparity
That certainly is not my argument, but the argument of nationally syndicated columnist Michael O'Hanlon.

3. Which could be why...
...when things go horribly wrong, as in Abu Gharieb and elswewhere, it is the backwoods, redneck mentality that can be shown as the root cause. It is classism at its worst.
