Require READING for TortureGate....
If you've just seen the pictures, the RW can convince you that it's just a "few bad apples" that committed the torture and that sacking General Karpinski and putting the torturers in prison will clean up the mess.

Once again, the RW is hiding the facts in plain view: you have to read them. Here is my required reading list for the scandal:

1.) Seymour M. Hersh's New Yorker article: http://www.newyorker.com/fact/content/

2.) The Taguba Report:
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/4894001

and

3.) Joe Conason's Salon article: http://www.salon.com/opinion/conason/2004/05/07/rights/

Feel free to post anything I missed.

2. Some good items from Talking Points Memo
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/week_2004_05_02.php#002936

"Along those lines, here's a clip from a piece in Saturday's Times by Fox Butterfield: 'The experts also point out that the man who directed the reopening of the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq last year and trained the guards there resigned under pressure as director of the Utah Department of Corrections in 1997 after an inmate died while shackled to a restraining chair for 16 hours. The inmate, who suffered from schizophrenia, was kept naked the whole time.' "

http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/week_2004_05_02.php#002933

"This article in tomorrow's Guardian suggests that some of these sexual humiliation methods apparently practiced at Abu Ghraib are taught to various special forces and military intelligence troops in the US and the UK, both to use them and also to prepare themselves to withstand them.

"What's now happening in Iraq is that the same methods are being passed down to untrained and unsupervised reservists; and the whole situation spirals out of control."

The full piece in the Guardian is also well worth reading: http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,2763,1212197,00.html
