'Cooks and Drivers Were Working as Interrogators'
Witness: private contractor lifts the lid on systematic failures at Abu Ghraib jail

by Julian Borger in Washington

Many of the prisoners abused at the Abu Ghraib prison were innocent Iraqis picked up at random by US troops, and incarcerated by under-qualified intelligence officers, a former US interrogator from the notorious jail told the Guardian.

Torin Nelson, who served as a military intelligence officer at Guantánamo Bay before moving to Abu Ghraib as a private contractor last year, blamed the abuses on a failure of command in US military intelligence and an over-reliance on private firms. He alleged that those companies were so anxious to meet the demand for their services that they sent "cooks and truck drivers" to work as interrogators.

..........................

so, this notorious prison was filled with mostly INNOCENT people, picked up randomly by crazed sadists to play with. god bless america.

1. When did top brass know things were messed up?
The Taguda report stated that the top brass recommended, when creating the Iraqi prisons, that "it is essential that the guard force be actively engaged in setting the conditions for successful exploitation of the internees."

Probably meaning that the guards could engage in a bit of pre-interrogation warming up of the prisoners.

Later, last fall, it was shown in a military investigation report prior to the Tatuga Report, that this method ran "counter to the smooth operation of a detention facility."

This is where, I think, things fell apart. the question is: once they got this initial report, what did the top brass do the remedy the situation? And who read this initial report?

4. Any govt branch that hires Dumbya as a pilot, ...
... is merely consistent in hiring cooks and drivers as interrogators.
