Oh dear God, I can't believe I'm related to this woman
I received an email from one of my cousins today announcing that her husband will be leaving for Iraq in July for a 12-15 month rotation. He was there for 3 months last year and, I have to admit I've been wondering why he, who is regular army, had only been there for 3 months while the Guard and Reserve troops have been stuck there so long.

None the less, I was feeling a bit sorry for her until I came to this:

"As much as I fear the worst, I know we need to stay in this fight. I read an article that puts a few thing in perspective regarding the entire Muslim fight. Please link to it and take a glace -- it's interesting. http://www.newsherald.com/viewpoint/phillucas/040404.shtml "

So I linked and found myself at the Panama City News Herald ("A Freedom Newspaper") and a column written by Phil Lucas, the Executive Editor.

This delightful <sarcasm on> column contained such gems as:
<snip>
We could fill the newspaper every morning with mobs of fanatical Muslims. They can’t get along with their neighbors on much of the planet: France, Chechnya, Bosnia, Indonesia, Spain, Morocco, India, Tunisia, Somalia, etc. etc. etc. Can anybody name three ongoing world conflicts in which Muslims are not involved? Today, where there is war, there are fanatical Muslims. We might quibble about who started what conflicts, but look at the sheer number of them.

One thing is sure. Muslim killers started the one we are in now when they slaughtered more than 3,000 people, including fellow Muslims, in New York City.

Let’s recap the Crusades. Muslims invaded Europe and when they reached sufficient numbers they imposed their intolerant religion upon Westerners by force. Christian monarchs drove them back and took the battle to their homeland. The fight lasted a couple of centuries, and we bottled them up for 1,000 years.

Now, a millennium later, Muslims have expanded forth again. Ask France. Ask England. Ask Manhattan. Two-and-a-half years ago fanatical Muslims laid siege to us. We woke up to the obvious. Our president announced it would be a very long war, then took the battle to the Islamic homeland. Sound familiar?

There may be a silent majority of peaceful Muslims – some live here – but that did not save 3,000 people in the World Trade Centers, the millions gassed and butchered in the Middle East, the tens of thousands slain in Eastern Europe and Asia, the hundreds blown to bits in the West Bank and Spain, or the four Americans shot, burned and hung like sausage over the Euphrates as a fanatical minority of Muslims did the joyful dance of death.
<end snip>

I can't believe I share some of the same genes with a woman who could believe this crap and think it's worth her husband risking his life. I received an email from another relative who also got this from her and that email wanted to know if I knew just what the hell was wrong with her. All we could determine is that she can't get this from the side of the family we all share.

1. Condolences
Every family has at least one nutcase. I'm sure it's a defense mechanism, she'd feel awful if her husband were going there to get shot at in a futile war based on a pack of lies and run for the benefit of thieves. Sometimes the truth is just too awful to admit.

4. wow, a history of the crusades in 3 sentences
that's a classic. I was kind of disappointed that Clinton's throbbing member wasn't mentioned.

Why don't you respond to her that if we were at war with Islam why didnt we invade Saudi Arabia? Oh, that's right, W's too busy licking Saudi sack. Tell her while her husband's out fighting in Iraq W's drinking scotch with the enemy in this "crusade", and they're both joking about this whole crusade/jihad business as the checks roll in.

8. And and incorrect and speculative history, I might add
The Muslims actually allowed Christians and Jews the freedom to live and practice in their occupied lands. In al-Andalus (Muslim Spain), for example, the Jews enjoyed a freedom under the Muslim rulers that a few centuries later became all but unthinkable after the Christians kicked the Muslims out. And the Christians of al-Andalus were not oppressed either - the Muslims made no attempt at mass conversion by the sword, and allowed the Christians to practice as they wished.

5. The "millions" gassed and butchered?
Wow, I had no idea. Saddam wasn't just LIKE Hitler, he was WORSE. In a nation of 45 million, he gassed and butchered millions. Jimminy Cricket, if people had wealth proportional to their stupidity, these people would live in barrels, and STILL owe millions.

6. my sympathies
Dinner last week with my brothers ended abruptly when one said, "We can't keep taking this kind of abuse we're getting in Iraq," and the other replied "Yeah, we should just glassify them them all."

I know how you feel.

Cousin is still a practicing Catholic, perhaps I'll just send her this. I wonder how she'll react when she reads the Pope is said to believe MIHOP or LIHOP

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=104&topic_id=1546932

"Bush's blood lust, his repeated commitment to Christian beliefs, and his constant references to 'evil doers,' in the eyes of many devout Catholic leaders, bear all the hallmarks of the one warned about in the Book of Revelations - the anti-Christ. People close to the Pope claim that amid these concerns, the Pontiff wishes he was younger and in better health to confront the possibility that Bush may represent the person prophesized in Revelations... According to journalists close to the Vatican, the Pope and his closest advisers are also concerned that the ultimate acts of evil - the September 11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon - were known in advance by senior Bush administration officials. By permitting the attacks to take their course, there is a perception within the Roman Catholic Church hierarchy that a coup d'etat was implemented, one that gave Bush and his leadership near-dictatorial powers to carry out their agenda.
