7. It doesn't seem to concern the labor unions that much
Looks like the Teamsters have endorsed him as of today.

4. His website says:
Immediately following the announcement in Detroit, Hoffa and Gephardt attended rallies with Teamsters members in Des Moines, Iowa and Manchester, New Hampshire.

So that's what I'm guessing.

5. if he had voted, those bills still would have passed
the republicans had the votes.

The "missed votes" is as relevant an "issue" as the faintness of Gephardt's eyebrows. Just something for people who didn't like him anyway to use against him.

6. That's not the issue
The issue is that the Honorable Richard Gephardt was elected to represent the people of the Third Congressional District of the State of Missouri. If he is out campaigning, he is not representing them.

10. campaigning is a good thing
I don't want a candidate who doesn't campaign, because Bush will beat him.

12. That's an excellent point!
Any candidate will have to give 110% to beat *!

13. I guess it's a union thing and they know all the players
We don't. It seemed interminable to me, as well, but at least they (finally) gave him a great reception. They said that this is the first time that the Teamsters have endorsed a Democrat since 1988. Good News!

15. I thought they endorsed Gore in 2000
Edited on Sun Aug-10-03 03:22 AM by Sean Reynolds
Though it was a bitter fight between Bush and Gore. I myself am not a fan of the Teamsters because of their crooked roots.

16. yeah they did come to think
I am not a big fan of them either, Hoffa and son leaning on the republicans in history bothers me. Aint it ironic Sean that the icon of union corruption is a republican, now tell that to your republican union basher, and even goldwater liked Hoffa, and its obvious why.

17. They said tonight that they had not endorsed a Democrat
since 1988. I was going over the candidates in my head. 1988 must have been Dukakis, no? He does not seem to me to be a labor candidate, but the choices were few, back then. They also said that others had been endorsed relucantly, but they had the most enthusiasm for Gephardt than they had had for anyone since FDR. I thought that was a significant statement on all recent national elections.

18. Sorta sad when a conservative union isn't supporting Bush.
Edited on Sun Aug-10-03 04:43 AM by Sean Reynolds
I mean if 1988 was the last time - that's amazing. Everyone knows Hoffa is corrupt and conservative. But losing out the Teamsters virtually eliminates ANY union support - which will mean a GOOD chance of losing PA and other blue collar states.

So question, if Gep doesn't get the nod - do you think the Teamsters will sway to Bush in 2004?

19. What I've heard is that the AFL-CIO is going to be the next to endorse
Gephardt. This would be a dream come true for the Democratic Party. This would mean millions of votes for Gephardt and they would be foolish not to nominate him. I like Gephardt. I have heard him speak and think he could get enough centrist support to win over Bush*. We liberals here tend to support candidates that may not appeal to the masses. Gephardt just might, with the major unions behind him, and may be our best hope. I have liked what he has had to say enough that I could support him without reservation. But, then, I would vote for Gary Coleman over Bush*.:D

Do I think the Teamsters would switch to Bush*? Anything's possible in a political match, but I think they have said too much and gone too far, on the record, to change horses in midstream.

20. I don't dislike Gep - just not my choice.
I really hope he doesn't get the endorsement from the AFL-CIO because I don't think he'd stand a chance against Bush. Why? Because he comes off as too monotone and he'll seem washed up in the publics' eye. And I'm sure the media will paint him that way too.

21. Did you see him in the Democratic Forum? That's what convinced me
He was right on his game and I was sorry that they didn't direct more questions his way. Before this, I was for Kucinich. I was disappointed. He was much too shrill and attacked his fellow Democrats, especially Dean. I was also disappointed in Kerry and Graham. Sharpton was also excellent, but is, unfortunately, unelectable. Edwards wasn't half-bad. Gephardt kept his cool, was well-spoken, yet spoke with passion. That's what did it for me. I felt that he could attract the center, as well as us liberals. We need someone who can attract more than the liberal fringe, that's the reason I have chosen to support Gephardt. I voted for Mondale and Dukakis, as the ``lesser of two evils.'' Gephardt is head and shoulders above them, in my view.:-)
