Will our adventures in the ME be rembered as our 'NANKING'?

1. A long way to go, but who knows?
As bad as Iraq is, Nanking was such a horror, there's still only the hint of it in reports we've read.

But if this truly proves a "generational" war, then by the time it's done it will undoubtedly leave Nanking in the dust, and claim bragging rights as one of the most appalling atrocities in recorded history.

5. but we're on the right track
'As bad as Iraq is, Nanking was such a horror, there's still only the hint of it in reports we've read.'

ah... how do you know what reports i've read? but anyways... what ones have you read/referring to, got any links?

from what i've read on the topic one thing i have learned is that there has been a LOT of propaganda - sound familiar? - especially in the numbers but it looks like the remaining population in the city after being OCCUPIED by the VICTORIOUS imperial army since MANY had FLED as people are prone to do when under attack, directly.

the army had a TERRIBLE time picking out the fighters from the civilians and there are PLENTY of paralels to today, right down to the jargon used...

ILLEGAL/UNLAWFUL COMBATANTS
STRIPPED of RIGHTS GC
SUMMARY TRIALS/EXECUTIONS
RAPE/TORTURE
ETfuckingC.
GREEN/SAFE ZONE

they had many interesting ways of TRYING to pick out their enemies out of the crowd... hair cuts, suntans, posture etc...

creppy...

"But if this truly proves a "generational" war, then by the time it's done it will undoubtedly leave Nanking in the dust, and claim bragging rights as one of the most appalling atrocities in recorded history."

agreed.

8. I was thinking in terms of scale.
Edited on Thu May-06-04 12:04 AM by Minstrel Boy
From what I've read, and I bet you've read similar stuff, I'm 100% certain there are Americans on the ground in Iraq who enjoy this shit as much as Japanese imperial troops did in Nanking. But Nanking saw hundreds of thousands raped, tortured and butchered. Iraq's raped, tortured and butchered still total, as best we can tell, in the tens of thousands. But they're no less raped, tortured and butchered.

And let's not forget the atrocity of sanctions: the deaths of half a million babies in the 1990s can be attributed to them. Then there's the ongoing nuclear contamination of Iraq with depleted uranium which will poison generations. Maybe those factors tip the scale.

9. 'hundreds of thousands'
they didn't actually rape, murder and torture EVERYONE in the city... thats part of the 'PROPAGANDA' that is wide spread as it is in every war including this one... remember, i was relating how they would try and distinguish betwee the 'good-guys' and the ILLEGAL COMBATNATS, but anyways, who's count'n, right?

and remember the 90's were US not 'them'

at least we on the DU are keeping score :hi:

2. killing Iraqis?
in all fairness, you make it sound like they were killing unarmed civilians, rather than doing their job and killing people who seek to kill them.

3. Yup.
90% of the 650 casualities in the recent Fallujah were civilians.

And then there's the civilians tortured, raped, and murdered in the concentration camps.

The US troops aren't intrinsically more moral then the Japanese or German troops in world war two.

To pretend otherwise and ignore the atrocities were causing is to fall for the belief that "it can never happen here."
