Abuse Photos Inflame Arab World

Morning Edition audio

May 4, 2004

Images of U.S. personnel abusing Iraqi detainees have severely damaged U.S. credibility in the Arab world. Arabic-language media had been reporting on claims of abuse long before the photos were released last week. Hear NPR's Steve Inskeep and Youssef Ibrahim, former Middle East correspondent for The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

1. .
I don't see how we recover from this.

We all know that Kerry has a heart in there somewhere, so we have to elect him first. Then, we take to the streets to bring our troops home.

2. Quite the correct position
the real fight starts once Bush has been evicted from the White House. Without this opening move, there is no hope for the rest of the game, but equally the move itself will achieve little if not strongly backed up by activism once a Democrat is back in the oval office.

3. Please remember
For all the useless talk of waffling there is one thing that is apparent about Kerry.

He is a real human being that can and has changed his mind.

That means there is hope of getting our people out of there.

With Bush, there is no hope.

4. the "arab world" wasn't exactly happy with us before
this does't help especially with al-jazerra likely misrepresenting the scale of this problem.

5. You mean the way CNN, Faux, etc. misrepresented
the scale of the Pvt. Lynch "rescue" and her abuse?

6. Well It Seems Fair
On Hannity and Colmes they had a guest that compared this to "fraternity hazing". I don't really think Al-Jazeera can do any worse.

8. And on CSPAN this morning...
a guy said it reminded him of when he was in the boy scouts and they "branded" him at a campfire.

First of all...who the fuck thinks that is normal??? Secondly, I wonder if he can see the slight difference of being with friends in the open woods and being locked up in a prison, naked with foreigners with guns?

10. But the truth behind the abuses enhances the believability
of ANYTHING the rumor mills cook up.

The atrocities at Abu Ghraib prison and the massare at Falujah (sp?) maens that any "solution" to the Iraq crisis that includes or that is sanctioned by the US will be utterly unacceptable to the Iraqis.
