Would we be better off if Asscroft hadn't lost to the dead guy?
While we'd still have him in the Senate, Jim Talent isn't much better, and he'd be doing much less damage as a Senator instead of AG.

Talent wouldn't have been on the ballot to defeat Jean Carnahan. We'd still have a Democrat in the Senate. Now we're likely facing a Baby Blunt in the governor's office.

But no way was it a bad thing for Jesus John to lose to Mel. Even with the tragedy, Mel's victory was much more sweet than bitter.

Truth: It would have been better for Ashcroft to run for president in 2000; get his ass kicked 16 ways to Sunday in the GOP primaries; be thoroughly demoralized and de-funded; and retire back to Willard, Missouri.

* would have still tapped Ashcroft as AG, then seat on SCOTUS (that's coming next)
