Do you look down your nose at tobacco smokers?
We are taught from childhood that it is unhealthy, almost suicidal. It's no longer fashionable or 'cool' in most circles. I just don't get the appeal.

Do you look down your nose at tobacco smokers?

Edited on Mon May-03-04 12:05 PM by mopaul
but she does it to calm her nerves. she smokes the herb too.
but no, i don't look down on cigarette smokers. i think it's funny when they whine about having to go outside in the cold to smoke.
we pot heads are used to that too.

9. I hate when people say smoking "Calms their nerves"
Edited on Mon May-03-04 12:13 PM by LynneSin
Because it's a known fact that it's not your nerves being calmed, but the intake of nicotine that feeds an addiction that will drive you nuts if you don't keep smoking. That's the beauty of smoking (at least in the eyes of the tobacco industry) - if you try quitting you'll go nuts with the withdrawel symptons

I mean, I'm going through the same thing with carb withdrawal. I know that if I buy a candy bar and eat it that I'll be a hell of alot less edgy than I am now. But I'm trying to restart my diet (which has been sidetracked this pass month) and I recognize the fact that it's not the candy bar that will calm my nerves - it's only feeding my addiction.

In 2 days this too shall pass

2. No, I don't get close enough for that
triggers an allergy response which usually lasts for 6 weeks. Just don't go there.

Do feel sorry for them. It must be an awful addiction. But then, nobody made them start it either.

5. I don't like it but
I don't "look down my nose" at people who smoke. It's a tough habit to break, I know that because a friend of mine used to smoke and finally quit after many tries.

6. I tried everything to quit. No luck
I grew up in tobacco country and started when I was 12. As a result, it's very interwoven into my makeup.

I've tried everything that's hit the market to quit. Nothing works. It's too complex a behavior to replace with a gum or a patch. Especially for a disabled person like me that has so much "empty" time on my hands.

7. No. I'm an ex-smoker and know what it's like
I've been a non-smoker for 12 years (with one very brief relapse) and I know how hard it is to quit and stay off them.

I only scoff at inconsiderate smokers who light up in elevators or non-smoking areas. I think our society has gone a bit overboard on this. For instance, I actually kind of miss the smell of smoke on flights. I know that nonsmoking flights are for the best, but it seems there should at least be a choice to get on a smoking flight. They could assign smoking crew to those flights...

I know some people who can smoke in moderation. I couldn't. Not only did I smoke compulsively, it made me more compulsive about eating. I actually gained weight when I smoked.

It's a filthy habit, and Ill, but smokers are just folks. If there were a healthy cigarette that didn't make you stink to high heaven, I'd probably want it.

8. Honestly? Smoking stinks
Its their right but. I would rather be in a room with someone that had uncontrolable flatualence. Its certainly not the person that is offensive. Its the smoke.

21. Smoking is an offensive habit that affects anyone near the smoker...
No smoking in my home or car...last 2 places where I have any control left on the planet. I choose not to be in that environment.

11. Only at those who smoke around their kids...
... God, I friggin' HATE that! For example, those rubes who have to sit in the smoking section at restaurants with their babies and toddlers because they can't go without a smoke for 90 minutes.

And, yes actually, I am a smoker... ask me anything.

13. Who cares whether you or anyone else thinks it's fashionable or cool?
As long smokers are not polluting anyone else's airspace then it's really no one else's business.

15. I quit 10 years ago...now I can't stand to be around smokers
I am getting physically sick (nauseous) if I have to breath in second hand smoke.

Knowing what we do now about the hazards of smoking I do look down on smokers. I think it is even worse when parents smoke in their home or car forcing their kids to inhale that sh*t.

I also know how hard it is to quit. I applaud every person who is at least trying to stop smoking.

24. as a reformed smoker ( gave it up totally when I had a kid
and so did my so,) I try to be tolerant. But I have to admit that when we went out to a club on a date recently, we wanted to burn our clothes after, due to the smoke smell! It is funny how you don't notice it when you smoke all the time. As much as I miss going to clubs all the time to hear music, I don't miss the smoke!

16. Yes if they do it in public
Edited on Mon May-03-04 12:15 PM by Bandit
I don't give one wit what someone does in the privacy of their home but when they choose to smoke in public knowing full well the health risks (secondary smoke) and the just plain obnoxiousness of smoking then I lose all respect for them as caring people. It become obvious that they care only about their own pleasure and nothing for the wishes and desires of everyone else. Selfish is what they are and I do look down my nose at them.

Perhaps you were told the truth from your childhood, friend.
Don't worry yourself, we smokers will all die out soon enough like the dinosaurs.
Interestingly enough, part of the reason I still smoke is the "early death" appeal of it. Sort of a guiltless suicide.

I don't drink, but I don't look down my nose at those who do despite the alarming statistical evidence.
