8. Here's a Usenet post
From November 2002 -- but it's not a citable primary source.
Long link hidden

There's a thread of 110 replies with it as well; I'm gonna go read those now.

7. Wow
31 of the 50 states have below average IQ's.... Priceless. Once again Mississippi brings up the rear - is there anything that they are not the most inept at?

This is a bullshit list, please lock thread.
Normal, average IQ (mental age = actual age) is 100. Mississippians might be dumb, but there's no way the "average" is severely retarded.

If you think this list is authentic, post a source link and we'll decide.

12. I don't think 85 is severely retarded
I think 75 is retarded. I believe that KC from the Howard Stern show scored in the high 80's, low 90's.

There is just a deeper ignorance in some parts of the country.

13. Think of what an average of 85 means...
It means that for approximately every person of normal intelligence (100 IQ) there is someone with an IQ of 70 (significantly retarded).

An average of 85 essentially means there's a retarded person for every normal person.

10. I wouldn't doubt that these numbers are acurate
I heard on the news a while back that New Hampshire was the most intelligent state by one measure or another, not IQ I don't think, but it would make sense that it was the smartest Bush state

11. How are these 'avg IQ' stats obtained?
Theoretically, everyone in the state would have to take them. I know you can argue, "Well, this is the MOE for such-and-such sample size," but why do I get the feeling that such samples are not representative?

....are at the bottom of the list. Rather like, I'm shock to find out that the Sun sets in the west.
