NOW is the time to read (or re-read) A BRIGHT SHINING LIE
Neil Sheehan's book tells the true story of J.P. Vann, a US military officer and , later, top civilian official in Vietnam.

It is chilling to read of the American government leaders' mindset in the 1960's. Their belief that the Vietnam war could be won by the overwhelming force of the American military machine is EXACTLY the same mindset the current administration has regarding Iraq.

There are other striking similarities between Vietnam and Iraq. I challenge anyone to read this book and not come to the conclusion we are re-living Vietnam.

1. Vann Knew His Business
If we had a few more John Paul Vanns and fewer Kimmits and mercs, we might not find ourselves in this abominable mess.

2. Wierd...I started re-reading that last night
I just finished Stanton's "Rise and fall of an American Army"..If you are a history buff of Vietnam, these are the two best accounts of it I have found. If you have a suggestion, please let me know. Thanks

3. I just heard about this book recently
and I think it will be next on my reading list, as soon as I finish John Dean's "Worse than Watergate".

Thanks for the recommendation.
