Wolfowitz comes up short on Iraq casualty count. "He mispoke, that's all"
Pentagon No. 2 comes up short on Iraq casualty count
Thursday, April 29, 2004 Posted: 5:47 PM EDT (2147 GMT)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Asked how many American troops have died in Iraq, the Defense Department's No. 2 civilian estimated Thursday the total was about 500 -- more than 200 soldiers short.

Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, an architect of the military campaign in Iraq, was asked about the toll at a hearing of a House Appropriations subcommittee. "It's approximately 500, of which -- I can get the exact numbers _ approximately 350 are combat deaths," he responded

"He misspoke," spokesman Charley Cooper said later. "That's all."

American deaths Thursday were at 722 -- 521 of them from combat _ since the start of military operations in Iraq last year, according to the Department of Defense.

1. He's a psychopath. Why should he worry about anyone's death
Other than his own.

3. It's no surprise. He's paid to lie.
It's what he does for a "living".

5. On Olberman tonight, he ALSO gave the lower 521 combat deaths #
which I thought was interesting because it improves, in the public mind, those figures by 200 people, minimizing the death toll. Going to email the show about this.

6. Very revealing.
Just goes to show how unplugged these guys are from the costs.

Then again this is nothing new.

These guys have never seen the price.

The troop, and civilian, deaths are nothing more than a means to end for them. Not even as important as pawns.

Whoops, I misspoke.

What assholes.

7. Well, it's like the Quaker Oats spokesmodel said:
"Why should we hear about body bags and deaths and how many, what day it's going to happen, and how many this or what do you suppose? Oh, I mean, it's, not relevant. So why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?"

9. If you're going to treat people like numbers...
...you should at least get the numbers right. How can anybody in uniform or anybody related to anybody in uniform support this National Cosa Nostra?

10. Wolfowitz clearly feels the pain for every single death in Iraq.
He just can't remember the number.

Sure, forgetting 200 deaths now seems like a big number, but by next year, there will be so many dead that 200 will be insignificant.

Isn't it great to have such compassionate conservatives running things?

What a ghoul.

tomorrow. He never served, and his three kids the same ages as the ones dying never did either. As least not for America. I think Israel still requires it to maintain the dual passports, they may have served there.
