Iranian court orders US pay 600 million dollars to chemical attack victims

An Iranian court has ordered the United States pay 600 million dollars (500 million euros) to Iranian soldiers wounded by Iraqi chemical weapons during the 1980-1988 war, the IRNA official news agency reported.

The court ruled that "the United States was responsible for supplying the chemical weapons to the regime of Saddam Hussein (news - web sites) and permitting their use."

The same court in March ordered Washington pay 1.2 billion dollars to several Iranian citizens for damages suffered in unspecified US military attacks in the 1980s.

US marines destroyed in 1987 an Iranian oil platform used as a base following missile attacks on Kuwait.

In 1988 US forces destroyed most of the Iranian navy and a US ship shot down an Iran Air Airbus killing 290 people.
