Great News: "Bess Eaton Donuts" Goes Under!!!
Edited on Mon Apr-26-04 03:14 PM by PROGRESSIVE1
For those who don't know, Bess Eaton is a Southern New England chain of donut shops that happens to be run by a Born-Again Christian.

http://www.connpost.com/Stories/0,1413,96~3784~2109100,00.html

-snip-
"The company grew over the years, and by 1994, it had about 70 doughnut shops in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut and employed about 750 people.

In 1993, Louis Gencarelli added Bible verses to the company’s packaging and mounted the words “Christ is the Answer” on company headquarters. In pamphlets distributed at the time, he explained he had found his faith after being hospitalized a third time for alcoholism."

"family-owned doughnut chain known for printing Bible verses on its coffee cups.

But instead the Westerly-based company that became a Rhode Island institution owes creditors some $17.6 million, while its born-again Christian head is accused of looting the chain to fund a lavish lifestyle."

I went into one of their shops in 1999 and noticed the Bible Verses on their cups and said, "Oh no!!!" I walked out and never went back.

One less Fundie terrorising America!

1. well, in this neck of the woods
In New England, their main competition has been Dunkin Donuts, a heavy contributor to RepubliCONs.

3. Hopefully, Dunkin Donuts will be next.

On Edit: I'm sure that Karen Hughes spends alot of time at Dunkin Donuts.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=694&ncid=703&e=1&u=/ap/20040426/ap_on_el_pr/kerry_medals

-snip-

"That criticism silenced for the moment, Bush adviser Karen Hughes turned to what Kerry did after returning from the war. Hughes said Sunday she was offended by Kerry's anti-war activities in 1971 and accused him of not actually throwing back his medals when he and other veterans protested in Washington.

"He only pretended to throw his," Hughes said in a CNN interview. "Now, I can understand if, out of conscience, you take a principled stand, and you would decide that you were so opposed to this that you would actually throw your medals. But to pretend to do so — I think that's very revealing."

6. Or Hobby Lobby
Hobby Lobby is owned by a Bible-thumper who places full-page religious ads in all the newspapers in their stores' service areas at Christmas and Easter. Their stores are closed on Sundays, and the employees in their Colorado Springs stores have engaged in anti-gay behavior as documented in the local press and apparently condoned by their management.

13. We also have Honey Dew Donuts and Mary Lou's
locally owned chained. Honey Dew has pretty good donuts, but Krispy Kreme are the best. There's one about three miles from me and I avoid it like the plague! You can't have just one.

No, I don't mean muffins, scones, or biscotti. I mean donuts. Deep fried goodness.

7. The fact that Krispy Kreme is 100% GOP Donor helps keep me thin!
The fact that one glazed KK Donut has more than 400 calories was not enough deterrence to prevent me from eating the occasional 2 or 3 of them....HOWEVER, once I heard that Dunkin Donuts and Krispy Kreme do not donate any money to Democrats *at all*, I was successfully able to keep them off my plate at all times.

It's a great story to bring up. Great laughs every time, and a good political conversation starter.

No Krispy Kremes at Progressive events! Every syrupy bite contributes to the enemy! ;)

11. B&J's is safely ensconced as a Liberal Icon (tm)
Given the fact that one of the founders is touring the country with a giant statue of GW with burning pants, it's pretty safe to assume they wouldn't turn over control to anybody with any GOP leanings. I would hope. :)

14. I thought they were dead 10 years ago
I remember one in Springfield when I grew up, at State St across from Mass Mutual..... Dunkin Donuts sucks too, especially since they stopped making the donuts and started trucking them in. Krispy Kreme is today's Coors beer, they are great while you can't get them, when they are everywhere, ho hum. Check out this

Sorry about the long link.
Liberal donuts? Try your local bakery. Keep it in the community.
