Christian far-right for tax cuts only to drive needy to faith orgs?

Excellent!! Am listening to The O'Franken Factor (time-shift recorded through a ReplayTV), and a caller just commented on a point I wanted to make, were there any chance of getting through on the phones lines -- and if I weren't listening delayed......

.... that is ...

Is it possible that the Christian Coalition lists tax cuts as a high priority in support of Grover Norquist's "Starve the Beast" approach to decimation of federal social programs -- in the hopes of driving those in need through the church doors?

If you can't get 'em with your message, get 'em through their stomachs.

Discuss. :)

1. You give them too much credit.
As far as I can tell, the far right wants poor people to disappear so they won't clutter up the streets anymore.

3. The churches want the social services funding
>Is it possible that the Christian Coalition lists tax cuts as a high priority in support of Grover Norquist's "Starve the Beast" approach to decimation of federal social programs -- in the hopes of driving those in need through the church doors?<

One of the pastors at the church I formerly attended admitted to me four years ago that he wanted US social services starved in order to funnel money to "church based ministries". When I commented to him that all poor don't necessarily want church intervention, he responded with, "If they want to eat, they'll go to church."

We left that church shortly afterwards, and have never been back.

4. Tentative thanks
Thanks for the confirmation of my fears, Julie.

Of course, for continued sanity I would have preferred it if someone had NOT come forward with a real example of the *exact* scenario I'd imagined. Ugh.

Thanks, though.

Karl

p.s. But doesn't your title contradict the content of your post? If federal funding is starved, then there won't be any funds for the churches, either. They want the bodies; power and money will follow.

p.p.s. (Don't let religion murk-up your faith, eh.)

6. Here's how I think it will go

They can "starve" the social safety net all they want. There will still be money for it; just because they cut off the money at the federal level doesn't necessarily mean the cash disappears (then again, if Halliburton gets another no-bid contract, this may happen after all.)

*'s henchpeople want to funnel money to churches for "faith based programs". They believe that this will insure more great victories for them; after all, isn't everyone a Caucasian, straight Christian?

5. Come to church or die

That is exactly what they want. What I would like to know is exactly who made them God?
