Fox News? Not in our henhouse

By Peter Worthington -- For the Toronto Sun

Why is Fox News banned from Canada yet CNN isn't? Is it, as some suggest, because Fox News is conservative while CNN is liberal and more acceptable to Canada's governing CRTC?

Or is it accidental, because CNN was first on the all-news scene?

Whatever the reason, in the U.S., Fox News has left CNN in its wake and is, arguably, becoming more influential than the establishment networks which also lean left.

Whenever I return from an extended visit in the U.S. (we have family there) I feel withdrawal pangs because Fox News is denied access to Canada.

2. CNN is liberal?

Canada would be wise to do away with both...

this guy is crazy, though:

"One needs both for better understanding -- Bill O'Reilly's view of politics versus James Carville's.

One needs a left and right to find balance."

um, dumbass, Carville is on a show called Crossfire whose premise is a left and right side debating each other. O'Reilly is all alone saying "cut his mic". This guy would have you think that Carville gets aan hour to himself to rant leftist spew while going unchallenged by anyone on the network.

did this idiot ever watch CNN?

Okay, Peter. :eyes:

Worthington's a marginalized crank, even to the Canadian right.

7. And he has connections to David "fired speechwriter for Bush" Frum
Edited on Mon Apr-26-04 12:52 PM by JohnyCanuck
It's either Worthington's daughter or step-daughter that's married to neocon tool and failed WH speech writer David Frum. It was she who sent out the email to friends and relatives bragging that her hubby had coined the "axis of evil" phrase (actually Frum wrote it as "axis of hatred" and someone else modified it to "axis of evil") used by Shrub in his SOTU speech. Speculation is that it's that email that got her dumb ass of a husband the sack as a Pretzeldental speech writer.

It also, paradoxically, put a bit of a dent in Frum's own standing in the White House. Hearing of his presence at its creation, his wife, Danielle Crittenden, emailed their circle of friends: "I realise this is very 'Washington' of me to mention, but my husband is responsible for the 'axis of evil' segment of Tuesday's State of the Union address." She signed off adding: "So I'll hope you'll indulge my wifely pride in seeing this one repeated in headlines everywhere!!"

Frum said the email "only went to about 15 people", but one of that number clearly lacked discretion and it ended up splashed across the online magazine, Slate. Frum left the White House soon after.

4. Worthington is an idiot!
A scant 5 minutes of news (if that!) per hour does not qualify FAUX News as a "News Channel."
Speaker's Corner in London's Hyde Park is fine for 10 minutes, but would you want 24 hours of drivel from barely educated opinion whores?

5. Globe and Mail: "Fox News. Not here yet, but already hilarious"
Reacting to my column, which cheerfully suggested that the proposal to bring the Fox News Channel to Canada should be acted upon promptly, so that we can all take a look, and get a laugh, O'Reilly gave us a Fox-style whacking. In his segment The Most Ridiculous Item of the Day, he quoted from my column (which called him "pompous"), dismissed The Globe as a lefty outfit and said, "Hey you pinheads up there, I may be pompous, but at least I'm honest."

Right. But the very idea that The Globe and Mail is "far left" only proves my point that the Fox News Channel is the most hilarious thing on American TV since Seinfeld. When we get to see it, we'll decide if, like Seinfeld, it's about nothing.

...

The people who support Fox News must be the most uncivil and foul-mouthed creatures on the planet. This is an informed opinion. They'd give English soccer hooligans a run for their money.

I lost count of the number of times I was called "an a**hole." It was at least 43 times, anyway. I was called "a pussy," "a wussy," "a pr**k," "a jerk," "a hack" and "a creep." A man in Cleveland not only called me "an a**hole" but also wished me a "f***ed-up day." A lady -- and I use the term advisedly -- in Colorado wrote to say that all Canadians are "a**holes" and then ordered me not to visit her state. I was also called a Canadian numerous times, as if that were an automatic and withering insult.

In an nice touch, a man from somewhere-in-the-USA opened by cheerfully calling me "sonny bub" and, after some confusing name-calling that involved the word "intellectual," he rose to a great rhetorical flourish -- he asked if I had served in Vietnam! Nothing of the sort has ever come from viewers of Newsworld, CTV Newsnet, CNN, MSNBC or, indeed ROB-TV. My point was that we have a great deal to learn from the Fox News Channel. And I am proved right. Talking to Americans is always a tonic. Bring on Fox News and bring it fast. Let's see this thing that has so many ardent and incredibly aggressive viewers.

6. Please don't encourage our Freeper-wannabes
Jerry Springer and WW(whatever) wrestling has a strong viewership up here. The last thing we need is them getting their news from right-wing sources as well.

8. Don't want to burst
your bubble but Jerry Springer is a democrat, and a very thoughtful one at that.

10. That's fine for Springer, but his show
isn't exactly a thoughtful platform for progressives.

9. A hypothetical day I'm dreading:
the day the CBC is privatized.

If the neoConservative Party ever takes power, you just gotta know that'll be coming.

The day we lose the CBC is the day I lose hope for Canada.
