1. almost amusing hearing him speak of the audience as "sober"
Edited on Sun Apr-25-04 01:02 PM by thebigidea
Repulsive creature... how a man who doesn't quite fancy Kissinger can take a liking to his pupils is beyond me.

But not booze, apparently! Keep up the bad work, Snitchy.

"Iraq was already broken and already ours before George Bush."

what slime. He's shaking and trying to hold in a belch.

I'm trying to hold back puking.

"There would have been a Fallujah all across Iraq!"

yeah, because its going great now.

2. AAAccckkk!
I hadn't read the thread until switching over, and was immediately confronted with Hitchens spewing his crap. The man is a clueless propagandist.

What other regimes does Hitchens suggest for liberation? Or was Iraq a special case?

3. I think he's in Phase IV of Friedman Syndrome
The neoliberal's neoneocon watercarrier's occupational hazzard - apparently, his orderly little pundit world is collapsing all around him...

and he doesn't notice.

Hitch has nothing to reply with.

5. HITCHENS IS AN IDIOT!!
We are NOT "isolating" the Jihadists,as Hitchens proclaims. We are growing their numbers, immeasurably.

Hitchens appears to be suffering from the delusion that there is a finite number of radical Islamists and that we only need to kill them, and that Iraq provides a wondrous assembly line on which we can process their carcasses.

We are driving moderate Islamists away from us and into the camp of the extremists. Hussein was a bad man, but we needed to prioritize the war on global terrorism and Iraq was not near the highest priority.

These people are _______.

6. this Ignatieff guy is a real snake
Edited on Sun Apr-25-04 01:13 PM by thebigidea
Mr. Reasonable, apparently.

Never heard of him before, thankfully - love the audience interaction, though. BOOOO! HISSSSS!

"It may be the first real democracy in this region and I think its worth the effort."

well, here's a helmet - you take point, Ignatieff - I'll cover your back! GO GO GO GO GO!

7. Robert Scheer has spoken the truth about Bush
Scher points out that the tens of thousands who marched world wide for peace, knew the Iraq invasion was wrong. They knew it without being informed by leaders or press, they knew what Bush was doing.

Three cheers. Kerry should use that reference for his next TV ad.

"Bush Knew", and tens of thousands who protested also KNEW.

I'm switching the channel, while Hitchens is speaking, to the AMAZING Rally for women's rights..also ten thousand strong. C-SPAN is carrying it LIVE.

14. WOW
Scheer is DESTROYING them. (I'm slightly delayed, via my ReplayTV.)

Wow.

Hitchens and Ignatieff are just sitting there stewing. I'll give them credit, though, they're not interrupting like we'd normally see/hear on the useless pundit shows that allow the wrong-wing idiots to dominate.

Gonna have to go look for some Scheer books.

11. I am doing the same
The only thing Hitch learned from his recent visit to Iraq was how many types of Scotch are available (answer for you trivia buffs: eight)

12. It was in the millions, and Bush called it a "focus group"
We tried to warn Callow Hal, but he had to engage in destructive behavior anyway.

It's the story of his life. The difference is, now he's finally found someone else to blame: God.

9. Ignatieff is a deceptive arse, changing his words
Michael Ignatieff comments that the terrorist bombing in Spain influenced their election... "Will people try to sabotage it ? Of course they will. Will people be killed trying to vote? Of course they will. Will people be intimidated? Of course they were... they will... as the Madrid and Spanish electorates were intimidated in March."

(slight murmur and subtle boos arise from the audience, likely from inferring Ignatieff's opinion to be that the bombings were the chief cause of the election result -- rather than the incumbant government's going against the stated will of 90% of the population)

He then subtly changes the perspective in his response to the boos, by stating that Spaniards have the right to vote out a government that dragged them into Iraq but that it was naive to think that the terrorists weren't trying to influence the election.

He then closes with a near-promise that the same will happen here (a pre-election bombing, that is). Why do these people seem so bloody hopeful that we're bombed before November?

And that's how you wind up with the Hitchens Hearts and Minds Strategy.

17. Hitchens spews outright lies
He says that Khaddafi turned to * and his poodle, and not to Kofi Annan or Jacque Chirac, as a result of their regime change policies.

Wrong.

Khaddafi had been on his own "regime modification" path for some time, even before * came to office -- and therefore well before 9/11 and *'s blundering into Iraq.

How was it accomplished?

Can you say... D-I-P-L-O-M-A-C-Y ???

18. Scheer's closing bit is almost mindblowing
Edited on Sun Apr-25-04 02:03 PM by thebigidea
phew! I gotta get this guy's book!

Snitchy tries to oneup at the end with repeated cries of "pathetic."

Also telling is that Snitch immedeately races backstage for an exit, and Scheer walks directly into the audience to talk.

Now an author outside with Connie applauding the debate: wish we'd had that in the Congress.

23. Yes.
Hitch hit the pavement quickly, didn't he? I saw that- he didn't even acknowledge the guy on his side. In view of his performance, perhaps tail between legs was the most appropriate exit.

21. AUDIO CLIP
Edited on Sun Apr-25-04 07:03 PM by krkaufman
Here's an audio clip from the debate, of one of Scheer's responses plus his emotional closing.

(11.5 minutes, 4MB, mp3)

Great listening. He *was* on fire, and brooked no slander from the wrong-wing bastids. Hitchens was left sputtering at the end. Just marvelous.
