What to do in case of draft?
I'll be turning 19 in June and am not looking forward to a draft. I'd be very appreactive of advice as to how to avoid this. I'm not exactly sure of the responses I'll get so let me say that I'll fight for a just cause, but will not be shedding blood for oil anytime soon.

1. say you are homosexual
that should work.

For insurance, I would go now to a doc and tell him you suffer from panic attacks and need drugs.

Develop a medical record now that you have been treated for mental health issues.

The army will not give a rifle to an emotional cripple afraid of his own shadow.

2. Don't ask, don't tell.
Have you thought carefully about reconsidering your sexual orientation? I hear tell they don't like that much.

4. Sorry no excpetions and a 4-F exception will pursue people
over a lifetime, only possible out will be a C.O file and even that one, plenty of people served in WW II as MEDICS

The best we can do is EDUCATE people and make sure we bring the issue up OFTEN... make it personal, yep YOUR JOHNNY will find himself in THAT HELL

3. EDUCATE others that it is coming
Some, especially those not subject to it, will tell you the good points to it, and it has them, and they are:

Democratize the nation

Make all carry the burden

Once you aknoweldge the good things... here are the BAD things

The profesional force is Gone

Abuses that were once common, are back

Drug use will be pervasive

Pay will go down (as low as it is, it will go further down)

More troops will get killed due to lower quality of training, after all it takes 100,000 USD to train and equip an infantry man today, you think we will spend that MUCH to train draftees? (And yes Rummy said that Draftees contributed nothing to the Nam war)

This is what you do, make it an issue you talk about REGULARLY.

Oh and if the draft comes back, MAKE SURE that you insist on NO EXPEPTIONS for ANYBODY... gender, social class or anything else...yep I want the twins to get an all paid vacation to the city of Fallujah... (and yes that also includes Chelsea, she is of the same age cohort)

5. Vote! And get everyone your age to vote, as well!
It might be the only way to stop the draft. Almost 1/3 of my HS graduating class died in Viet Nam. I hope this new war doesn't haunt you the way Viet Nam haunts me.

7. You may already be 4-F
You'd be surprised how easy it is to be 4-F. I was and never knew it until I got out of college and took the exam for my Naval Reserve Commission. It was just after Saigon fell in 1975.

The argument went like this:

Doctor: "You're unfit for the Army"
Me" "I'm going in the Navy"
Doctor: "You're unfit for the Army"
Me: "I'm going in the Navy"

OK, that bizarre experience went on for a while.....

I ended up going through some strange tests (that's another story!)and still getting in.

I know you want the opposite. You should be able to find out what disqualifies you and have your own Doctor check you out.

I think the best way is to write your Senator and Representatives and have others do the same. I have been telling all young people I can that Bush=Draft for some time. Start a movement. This would help everybody who does not want to be drafted.
