At least, from the start of the 20th century forward...From the time of Coolidge and Hoover in the low-tax, high spending '20's and the Depression that followed, it was a Democrat, FDR, that came to the rescue. People had never been more desperate.
Then there was Nixon with his lies about ending the Viet Nam War and the scandal-ridden Watergate Administration. He made a deal with Gerald Ford for a pardon. Troops had deserted and gone to Canada rather than fight in what they thought was a useless war. The country was divided and it was questionable whether or not there was an honest man to take the helm. It was Jimmy Carter that restored the faith in our government, to a large degree with his human rights policy, and he granted an amnesty to all the young people that had fled to Canada rather than go to war in Viet Nam. He, too, was a Democrat.
Then there was Ronald Reagan with his big smile and Iran Contra scandal - who had no respect for the Constitution or the duties of the President and the Congress as outlined in that Constitution. His VP was George Bush Sr. They spent us into oblivion. When they left office, we had the largest deficits in our history. Enter Bill Clinton, another Democrat.
Then, with $200 million in his warchest, and the willingness to do whatever it took to take the WH back, George Bush Jr came onto the scene. He took a huge surplus, which had been predicted to go to $5 trillion dollars, and spent it all like a drunken sailor and broke his own father's recrd for the largest deficits in history. He strode arrogantly on his make-believe pony and turned his back on the UN and most of our traditional allies. He was too busy playing politics and making enemies to notice that terrorists were ready to attack NYC and Washington. He had no idea. He was an Alfred E Neuman, in way above his head. Then, for personal revenge or whatever, he took our nation to war and up to this point, we have lost over 700 American lives and countless thousands of Iraqi lives. Is it time for another Democrat to come in with a shovel and clean up another mess by an elephant? This time, he better bring a big shovel.
