Anybody remember this classic Bush quote regard his Civil Rights record?
Bush defends decision not to attend NAACP annual convention being held in Texas

WASHINGTON, (UPI) -- President George W. Bush on Monday defended his decision not to attend the NAACP's 93rd annual convention being held in Texas this week during an afternoon news conference with White House reporters.

The president was in the midst of answering questions, when Dallas Morning News reporter Bob Hillman asked the president to respond to criticism that he has not attended a NAACP convention since his election and that his administration's civil rights record was not considered stellar.

Bush paused briefly and with a slight smile, answered Hillman's question.

"Let's see. There I was, sitting around the table with foreign leaders, looking at Colin Powell and Condi Rice. Yeah," Bush said.

Hillary Shelton, director of the NAACP's legislative office in Washington, reacted with some surprise.

"He said that?" said Shelton from the group's convention in Houston.

U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell and national security adviser Condoleezza Rice are two of the highest-ranking blacks in Bush's administration along with U.S. Department of Education Secretary Rod Paige.

Is it me or is this akin to Bush using the old “some of my best friends are Black.” line ? In my honest opinion Powell continues to allow Bush to use him as a front for his record on civil rights while dissing him in his role as Secretary of State.

1. That line infuriated me
He used it like a shield, to deflect all attention from his lousy record. It was like, "See? I've hired me a few o' them people, so you can't say nothin'!".

6. What Civil Rights Record?
He hasn't shown up at an NAACP convention since the 2000 election. Junior failed to show up for it when it was held in Houston in 2002.

And his team thinks they are going to do better than the 9% of the Black vote they got in 2000?

7. Rod Paige makes three
but that doesn't even come close to the number of African-Americans President Clinton had in his cabinet during his presidency.
In fact Cinton had the most diverse cabinet in US history.

9. That's what Bush does not get about leadership. . .
. . .there is something about a leader that gets people that do not agree with them to like them or respect them. John McCain gets it. I do not agree with McCain on much, but there is something about him as a leader that makes me really like him. This country is so split on ideology, it is important for us to have a president that still understands how to reach out to people who do not support him (or hopefully someday) her.

5. Goes along with the "brown skin people" quote
I just want to know who * hangs around with that would dare even suggest to a President that "brown skin people can't govern themselves" as * described.
