While President Bush has dismissed analogies with Vietnam, Ellsberg said, "How would he know? He wasn't there."

In fact, he said, many of the top Bush aides who were gung-ho to invade Iraq deliberately avoided serving in Vietnam. The one senior official who saw combat in Vietnam, Secretary of State Colin Powell, was the only one to oppose the war, although Ellsberg characterized his opposition as ineffectual.
