Kerry Sets New Records for Any Candidate Ever in a Single Quarter or a Single Month

WASHINGTON, April 20 /U.S. Newswire/ -- In a new FEC report to be filed today, the Kerry campaign will report having collected $54.8 million in the first quarter of 2004, beating both President George Bush's totals this quarter and the previous quarterly fundraising record for a presidential candidate - incumbent and non-incumbent - by more than $2 million.

Kerry also broke the record for fundraising in one month, gathering $42.8 million in March after he secured the Democratic nomination. These record-breaking figures were amassed through the largest grassroots effort in history - a groundbreaking 355,000 contributions in the quarter.

"Americans are responding in record-shattering numbers to John Kerry's positive vision to create jobs and grow the American economy," said Kerry campaign manager Mary Beth Cahill. "The extraordinary support that John Kerry has achieved is a reflection of the extraordinary numbers of Americans who are ready for change in this country and tired of George Bush's failed leadership. Never before have Democrats been so united, and never before have Americans been so ready for a new leader in the White House."

Previously, the Kerry Campaign had announced that it raised $50 million in the first quarter, but after tallying total receipts from the quarter, the total climbed even higher to beat all previous records for any campaign - Democrat, Republican, incumbent or challenger.

JohnKerry.com has once again proved to be the top fundraiser for the campaign as grassroots donors raised $26.7 million this month and broke every online record. These donors have been the backbone of the Kerry Campaign's fund-raising this month.

KERRY CAMPAIGN BY THE NEW RECORD-BREAKING NUMBERS:

$54,800,000 - total raised in the first quarter of 2004.

$42,800,000 - total raised in March 2004.

$26,700,000 - amount JohnKerry.com raised this quarter.

$2,600,000 - amount JohnKerry.com raised in one day, March 4, 2004.

355,000 - contributions to Kerry Campaign in just 10 weeks.

245,000 - individual online contributions during quarter.

200,000 - individual online contributions during March 2004.

$109.00 - Kerry Campaign average online contribution.

$75.00 - Kerry Campaign average contributions from the mail.

275 - number of days left in the Bush presidency.

196 - number of days until Election Day.

Other facts:

-- The Bush campaign set the record for money raised by a challenger in one quarter, $29.7 in the second quarter of 1999. The Kerry Campaign cleared that total by over $25 million.

-- Before this campaign, Vice President Gore had set the record for most money raised by a Democrat for the entire primary campaign - $34 million. The Kerry Campaign raised more than that in the month of March alone.

-- The Dean Campaign's biggest day online was just shy of $820,000 on June 30, 2003.

-- Nearly one out of every two people called by the Kerry campaign contributed over the phone. This conversion rate is just amazing. It shows that Americans are more united then ever in wanting to win back the White House this fall.

-- Nearly all of the fundraising occurred in just 10 weeks after the Iowa caucus.

4. What a waste of $
We need clean elections across the board in this country. All the $$$ candidates fund-raise could be put to such good use in other ways. :(

5. As long as we aren't forcing one of the parties to change these laws
NOTHING will change. Hence we should be happy to see this money being used to oust THE worst president this country's ever had the misfortune to suffer under.

We need to deal with the reality of what Bush is trying to do with his purchased propaganda campaign. GPV (apologies:-) )

Even with this record-breaking month and quarter, George Bush is still sitting on over $86 million, and news reports today say that the Bush/Cheney campaign has spent $55 million on misleading TV ads in just the past month. But with the strength of the campaign and the enthusiasm the country is exhibiting for John Kerry's positive vision of a better America, the campaign is confident it will have the resources needed to compete through the convention in July 2004 and on to victory in November.

JohnKerry.com has once again proved to be the top fundraiser for the campaign as grassroots donors raised $26.7 million this month and broke every online record. These donors have been the backbone of the Kerry Campaign's fund-raising this month.

8. True. That is why Kerry is a longtime advocate of public financing.
Edited on Wed Apr-21-04 12:39 PM by blm
As president he'll use the bully pulpit to impress upon the people that public financing is the best way to preserve democracy in this country.

Maine adopted the legislation drafted by Kerry and Wellstone (and discarded in the Senate) and now has the Clean Election law.

6. I like to see that he is getting his money from individual donors
instead of concentrated sources, like, say, Enron?

It would be interesting to compare individual donors for Kerry to individual donors for bu$h*co.

11. phase 1 is required for the 30th phase to have a chance
phase 1 is getting anyone but bush in office (to save the world). phase 2 through whatever is saving this country from all its other foolish thinking. god willing we'll get a chance to get rid of this antiquated party system, along with bad medical system, bad supply trains for the troops, bad tax system, bad everything you can think of.

and now phase 1 is getting more money. thank god, there might be a chance to save ourselves from the brink. keep it up kerry!
