Why do you like Dean when he says stuff like this?
Edited on Tue Aug-05-03 01:26 AM by Must_B_Free
"To discuss this further is a distraction from the big issues that will face the next president: fighting terrorism and reviving the American economy."

Sheesh. More 'terror war'? Sounds like more Bush'it

1. I don't understand.
Should Dean be saying,

"The next president should surrender to terrorists and destroy the economy." ????

Unbelievable.

3. I'm trying to be polite
but your post is just nonsense without a link.

I just read the Larry King interview and I seem to remember that Dean answered a question about medical marijuana very well indeed and then wanted to move on. I think that may be the context for the quote, but I'm not sure.

4. There are two issues in national elections
Peace and Prosperity. They never change. Those is them. The economy in the shitter and terrorists are bombing big buildings in the US. The federal government needs policies on these issues. Only Ralph Nader thinks that routing more PIRG money to his organizations is important. It's a non-issue for the rest of us.

5. Wait a Minute!
Dean didn't say that...I said it in another thread as a hypothetical answer to the question on gay marriage. Sheesh!

And sheesh to anyone who thinks war on terror is not going to be an issue in the next election. Which country are you living in?

8. It's time for the country to get over 9/11
Using it as an excuse for endless war against anyone we define as a terrorist will not solve our problems. We need to address the root causes of terrorism, not hunt down their leaders and networks like cowboys. I wish Dean had a more sophisticated and nuanced view on these issues.

11. No way!
The people who lost family in 9/11 are not willing to just "Get Over It". We were attacked and we have to protect our citizens. If you had lived anywhere near where the attacks took place believe me you would not want to feel like a sitting duck (on a hill overlooking the Pentagon). What we don't have to do is bomb innocent Muslim victims back to the stone age - but that doesn't mean we shouldn't make protecting our citizens the highest priority. We don't do that now, and that's why Bush should go down.

15. Whether you agree or not
terrorist "leaders" pose a real threat to America and the world that needs to be dealt with. I'm sickened by Bush and others milking 9/11 for political gain and for them using it as an excuse to invade countries, and I agree that we need to address the root causes of terrorism. But part of the "war" has to involve identifying terrorist leaders and disrupting their activities. If only the idiot in the White House had taken that more seriously, we might've avoided 9/11 altogether.

9. I like him very much for saying this.
Edited on Tue Aug-05-03 02:41 AM by Gringo
We need to fix the economy, and the American people won't undertand if he calls the war on terror what it really is, pure rhetoric. He must make it clear that he is going to protect this country and be strong on security. That doesn't mean he's going to invade Iran.

I know there's no such country as "Terror", and thus there can be no "war". The war on drugs is a farce, too. But a campaign run on ending it would go nowhere. He's just using the rhettoric that the masses recognize.

ON EDIT: I'm sure he wouldn't conduct this "war" with the blatant fearmongering of the Bushies, either.

13. Say He Did Say That...
...what's wrong with it? I'm not for more terrorism, and the economy is swirling the bowl.

Just as the War on Poverty didn't mean a shooting war, there are other ways to prevent more terrorism - like not pissing off the world ala Chimpy.

14. Hello !!!!?????
If the Pubbies are able to portray the Dems as likely
to make the country more vulnerable to terrorism then
the Dems are toast.

Dean or any other Democrat has to be able to convince
the electorate that they are going to be able to keep
them safe from terrorists or Bush will win easily.

Fair or not those are the facts. Any Dem is going
to have to address terrorism as an issue.

16. No, we won't fight the terror war if Dean gets elected
We'll just send the Saudis and al-Qaeda flowers and candy and ask them nicely to stop.

*sheesh*

17. Here:
In the last century, our strength as a nation was measured more by the extent to which others emulated and respected us abroad than by the extent to which they feared and loathed us.

I will not divide the world into us versus them. Rather, I will rally the world around fundamental principles of decency, responsibility, freedom, and mutual respect. Our foreign and military policy must be about the notion of America leading the world not America against the world.
