Bush wants death penalty expanded to 23 more crimes?
I got this from the ACLU earlier today. Am I the only one that gets creeped out about this? I know the Nazis were big on very broad all encompassing crimes that carried the death penalty. Never thought I'd see it here.

"Despite being stymied in its efforts to push a successor to the controversial USA Patriot Act through Congress, the Bush Administration is urging the U.S. House to pass a piece of this legislation that would dramatically expand the federal death penalty, including expansion based on the PATRIOT Act's infamous "domestic terrorism" provisions.

Not only would this proposed legislation create 23 new death penalties in one stroke, the bill also creates an unprecedented catch-all death penalty for any crime that meets the PATRIOT Acts overbroad definition of terrorism. "

1. I am creeped out.
Ashcroft got all wispy and excited when he talked about this in the 9/11 commission.

And I have decided that the commission's sole goal/purpose is to set the foundation for justifying all out fascism here...

Welcome to DU! :-)

4. I wonder if BushCo will decide
that dissent is domestic terrorism. I'm sure Ann coulter could write one of her ignominious essays justifying such a rule.

8. That is what terrifies me most about the patriot act
People who defend the act say that it is a good thing because it gives the government unquestioned authority to go after terrorists who want to hurt America.

Yeah, that's well all and good, but could someone please define what exactly is a terrorist?

They can say anything they don't like is terrorism...

Shit, they are already using "narko-terrorism" to describe drug offenders.

15. Definition of terrorist
According to the FBI memo on the Patriot Act:

"The term is defined to mean activities occurring primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States involving acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or any state and appear to be intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion, or affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping."

I understand this to mean acts that threaten people that are intended to intmidate or coerce, influence policies, or affect the conduct of government. I'm not sure you have to be planning mass destruction, assassination or kidnapping to be qualified as a terrorist according to this definition.

5. Fascism
Fascism. Pure and simple. All the building blocks are being put in place. All the tools legal and otherwise to "bootstrap" the American system from a democracy to a fascist regime are being prepared. There can no longer be any doubt.

I call it treason. All these assclowns took an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution from all enemies, domestic and foreign. They themselves are its greatest enemies.

Given the level of their understanding of what the American flag represents, I am amazed the Bush administration does not use it to wipe their asses. They might as well.

If these guys have their way, this country will soon represent no worthwhile ideals at all.

16. You know it just occured to me...
What happens when you mix broad death penalty law that could apply to what could easily be a misdemeanor with....

1. Military tribunals
2. Secret arrests
3. No right to an attorney

All things that are already in place....
