For the non-readers. B.D. is the football coach/warrior.

1. Two nationally syndicated strips
"Doonesbury" and "Get Fuzzy" have men losing legs in their stories this week. So the war has hit the comics. "Get Fuzzy" is mostly funny, so this is a bit out of character. Maybe it will help wake more people up to the horrors of war and the illegal invasion that's going on now.

10. It's out of place in Get Fuzzy.
The strip usually avoids any real sense of commentary and while I like the strip as a whole, I find the addition of the Iraq story arc to be jarring given that it comes out of nowhere.

It definitely belongs in something like Doonesbury and it would probably fit pretty well in "For Better or Worse" if the story had been set up with someone like Mike or Weeder deciding to cover the war as part of their job.

But Get Fuzzy? Doesn't work in my mind since the human character is pretty much the least interesting character to begin with and is really just the straight guy for the jokes.

2. Freepers will crucify him for the crime of telling our soldiers' stories.
I mean, how horrible, that we should actually humanize the plights of those very same Freepers' husbands, wives, sons and daughters.

I guess that's what they mean by "giving comfort to the terrorists".

3. This may really bring the war home to some
This is going to be a powerful week for the Doonesbury strip. I have always had a soft place in my heart for BD. If anything will make the point about the effect of the war on people, this strip may do the job.

The VC was named Phred (IIRC) and later (again if IIRC) he become an unrepenant capitalist after Trudeau came back from one of his sabaticals and brought his characters into the post-college years.
