McKinney: 9/11 Probe to Justify Comments

The Associated Press

Sunday 18 April 2004

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Cynthia McKinney, who as a Georgia congresswoman suggested that the Bush administration had prior warning of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, says an independent commission's investigation into the matter justifies her concerns.

"What it proves is that we need to have answers to the question that I originally asked," McKinney said in an interview with The Associated Press.

McKinney said she was right to question what the White House knew before the attacks, but that some controversial comments about the administration were taken out of context and have become an "urban myth" among her foes.

Her comments March 25, 2002, during an interview on KPFA radio in Berkeley, Calif., were interpreted as suggesting that the White House allowed the attacks so investment groups specializing in defense contracts would benefit from an ensuing military buildup. She singled out the Carlyle Group, where Bush's father was an adviser.

1. History will not be kind to BushCo
But Cynthia is going to go down as an American hero! She was courageous when none of her colleagues had the guts to be.

She rocks!

3. Sickening, eh?
The Most Dangerous Man in the World, basically says, "What history, we'll all be dead"

"Even if I knew the world were to end tomorrow, I would still plant my apple trees today" MLK

Question? Do ya think there will ever be a national GWB day?

4. She's from Atlanta, right?
Isn't Atlanta where America's greatest peace martyr came from?

Ya mean ta tell me Ms. McKinney is following in MLK's footsteps?
Damn, she's dangerous. Not to us little folk, no, but to the elites she's like an ocean in their oil wells.

5. And I wonder
if any of the Democrats who ridiculed Cynthia McKinney will apologize to her. Paul Begala (sp?) was VERY HARD on her when she was running for re-election. This is one of the reasons I stopped watching Cross Fire.....maybe I should send Paul an email....

9. I heard Zell Miller
is distraught about how he reacted. He is penning a heartfelt apology that he will be delivering to her next February 30.

7. The Quote AP is running is STILL a lie three years later
Greg Palast wrote a long story called "The Screwing of Cynthia McKinney." Link...

http://www.alternet.org/story.html?StoryID=16172

Basically what the AP did on the quote is take the section of the interview where McKinney asked "What did they know and when did they know it, and cut and paste another line from TEN MINUTES LATER in the interview. Link...

"...Now is the time for our elected officials to be held accountable. Now is the time for the media to be held accountable. Why aren't the hard questions being asked? We know there were numerous warnings of the events to come on September 11. Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, delivered one such warning. Those engaged in unusual stock trades immediately before September 11 knew enough to make millions of dollars from United and American airlines, certain insurance and brokerage firms' stocks. What did this Administration know, and when did it know it about the events of September 11? Who else knew and why did they not warn the innocent people of New York who were needlessly murdered?

September 11 erased the line between "over there" and "over here." The American people can no longer afford to be detached from the world, as our actions abroad will have a direct impact on our lives at home. In Washington, DC, decisions affecting home and abroad are made and too many of us leave the responsibility of protecting our freedoms to other people whose interests are not our own. From Durban to Kabul to Atlanta to Washington, what our government does in our name is important. It is now also clear that our future, our security, and our rights depend on our vigilance.

DB: Well, Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, it’s great to have you with us on Flashpoints...."

And 10 mins later in the interview (20 col inches later in transcript)...

"...There was adequate warning. There were people who failed to act on the warnings. And THAT’S what ought to be investigated. But instead of requesting that Congress investigate what went wrong and why, we had President Bush, painful for me to say that, but, we had President Bush place a phone call to Majority leader Senator Tom Daschle, asking him NOT to investigate the events of September 11th. And then, hot on the heels of the President’s phone call was another phone call from the Vice President asking that Tom, that Tom Daschle also NOT investigate the events that led to September 11th.

My question is: What do they have to hide? And why is it that the American people are being asked to make tremendous sacrifices now in our civil liberties, in the fact that we got this request for an unprecedented hike in…in…the hike alone, of 48.1 billion dollars, is more than any one of our allies spend TOTAL in their defense...."

This was one of the most blatent distortions of a quote perpetrated by a major press organization in many years at that time. The AP has refused to acknowledge they interntionally changed this quote for three years now.
