1. In the summer before the convention
Which is typical. He should ride all the "who's it gonna be?" speculation in the press as long as possible, name the veep and ride a wave of publicity into the convention.

Naming a veep now would be a waste of media attention, as well as possibly irresponsible. He needs to time to vet his veep, and I doubt he's even winnowed a short list yet.

2. I guess I'm just anxious
I'll never forget hearing that Gore had picked Lieberman - it was such a disappointment. I could feel my hair grow listening to Joe droning on. The VP pick is so crucial in a close race.

3. Probably the second or third day of the convention
To build suspense and keep media attention. If the VP is known before the convention, there will be no drama and no viewers.

I really don't expect it any sooner.

5. I 'm in the minority when I say that a candidate should announce his
government before an election. It just makes sense to me.

of the convention. He'll probably announce it the week before the convention, maybe even late that week.

10. there are rumors going around
that wes clark doesn't want the job. i'm not sure if it matters or where it comes from. but all i know is if kerry thinks clark is the only one that can help him by being his vp then clark will accept whether he wants the job or not.

9. Kerry himself said
he will pick between now and the convention. he wont say anything else about it though. and it's a very top secret thing with most in his campaign not knowing what is going on. remember, kerry has been through the vp thing before in 2000 so he wants to do it in a way that is respectful towards those he considers.

rarely is the person most talked up by the media and others chosen. most in 2000 thought it would be kerry or maybe bob graham but it ended up being lieberman. i remember when the short list was released and even with lieberman's name on it most didn't really think it would be him.

14. Right now I would say it is a toss-up between three people...
Tom Vilchek <sp> , John Edwards, and Bill Richardson... I would not be surprised to see Dick Durbin added to the list.

15. Lots of times the choice is a real surprise
Dick Cheney, Jack Kemp, Geraldine Ferraro, Dan Quayle.

Sometimes the pick seems to come out of nowhere.

17. Al Gore and Joe Lieberman were also
everyone was surprised clinton not only went with someone in the same geographic region but a state right next to him. and most thought it would be john kerry in 2000. some thought maybe bob graham, evan bayh, and even john edwards. but most weren't really thinking lieberman would be chosen.

It's Bob Dole.

Whenever he wants to. It is up to him. No rules apply here. Only the doctrine of political advantage.
