Cheney's wife grilled by third graders
Cheney's wife grilled by third graders

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/national/apasia_story.asp?category=1104&slug=SKorea%20Lynne%20Cheney

SEOUL, South Korea -- Lynne Cheney, wife of Vice President Dick Cheney, faced some tough grilling Friday when she met American and South Korean third graders on a tour of a U.S. military base in Seoul.

Mrs. Cheney stopped in at the Seoul American Elementary School on the sprawling Yongsan Army Garrison in the South Korean capital to give a short history lesson from her 2002 book "America: A Patriotic Primer."

Among the questions: "Do you like America or Korea?" and "Did your husband ever fight in a war?"

During the brief question and answer session, Cheney replied that Korea was a "wonderful country" but that "America is my country. I think there is something in all of us that loves our home."

As for her husband's military record, she said: "He was in college, so he did not fight in a war."

3. What were they all for?
I think Franken talked about it in Liars, but I don't remember what the deferments were for.

4. Chicken feathers.
Shaving the feathers off every morning would have been a military hazard in the field, so they let him off.

13. One could argue that his draft dodging
is the reason that there is a Mrs. Cheney.

16. These were American children, our soldiers' offspring
So such a question is all the more meaningful to them.

http://www.estripes.com/article.asp?section=104&article=21625

The wife, a 1st Armored Division spouse in Wiesbaden who did not want to be identified because she was afraid of possible repercussions to her husband, said the extension has been difficult for her children, ages 2 and 10.

“Well, to put it this way, our son asked a soldier who works at the post office if he was his daddy,” the woman said.

12. Maybe we should outsource our political reporting
to the S Korean school system...the major bureaus should issue a ton of H1B visas, or at least develop some kind of head-start program.

;)

14. Those third graders don't have a job to protect
The media whores don't want to end up like Ashleigh Banfield, doing severe winter weather reports out in the cold.

15. That kid must hate freedom to ask a question like that.
Is he a former Baathist or something? Funniest thing I have read in a while. It is hysterical that Lynne tried to rationalise Dick's chicken hawk status by talking about his role as defense secretary. I am sure that was convincing to THIRD graders. The kid asked whether your husband fought in a war, Lynne, not why he didn't or what political appointment he was able to land later on. The correct response was, "No he didn't."

18. Lynne pulled the same schtick in Vicenza, Italy two months ago
Edited on Fri Apr-16-04 11:19 AM by lebkuchen
on one of our army bases. She's touting her "patriotic" book while her husband grandstands on a US army base that either hasn't deployed troops to Iraq, or at least not entire divisions (safe territory), yet he hangs around just long enough to reenlist them for the cameras because, god knows, we need the boots on the ground. He wouldn't have the guts to appear on an army base in Germany and take military family questions.

After he promotes some hapless troop and reenlists two others, he goes to a local cemetary to lay a wreath for one of our fallen soldiers in .......the Korean War. How nice.

So, you see, Cheney's chickenhawkedness didn't end when the Vietnam War did.

I recorded the Vicenza event here (nice archive service, btw...worth the price of membership considering how often my computer crashes):

21. Would have paid admission to see that
To watch ol' Lynn stutter while trying to bullshit her way out of answering the question honestly and forthrightly. Especially considering that these children have to deal with the fear every day that daddy or mommy will get hurt in a war.
