Shocker from my mom--and some encouragement
I got off the phone earlier today with my mother, who gets all her news from network TV and thus believes:

  • Saddam Hussein was directly responsible for 9/11
  • Iraq had WMD
  • Dean was crazy and unable to be trusted with the nuclear button

...you get the idea. Anyway, I told her about the recent Colorado caucuses (I'm a county delegate!), and she told me "You'll be surprised to know that I'm going to vote for Kerry in November."

Needless to say, I was, and asked her why. For one thing, she's on Medicare, and things have gotten to the point where she can't afford some pretty vital medication. She's pissed, and blames Bush. Also, while she initially supported the war in Iraq (see above), she now thinks that Bush has no idea what he's doing and that it's going to turn into another Vietnam.

I managed to refrain from saying "I told you so" (go, me), and told her voting for Kerry was a great idea. (Disclaimer: Kerry leaves me lukewarm, but I'd vote for a three-toed sloth if it meant getting His Chimperial Majesty out of office.)

People, trust me here--if my mom, who's married to a man who thinks "nuke the whole place into glass" is a valid Iraq policy, is coming around, then things are looking up.

I'm scared at what Bu$h is going to do to win back the repukes who are tired of Dumbyass' bullshit.

3. Cool!
People have to figure it out on their own. The best thing we can do is provide facts.

5. Excellent!
My colleague's father, a life-long Mepublican, will vote for Kerry for exactly the same reasons your mom will. In fact, he would've liked Kucinich as the nominee.

6. Good to hear that!
I am lucky, my parents are hard core Democrats. My dad isn't too happy about having to vote for Kerry, but like you, he would "vote for a three-toed sloth if it meant getting His Chimperial Majesty out of office" also.

7. Women are taking control of this election.
I heard last night that * beats Kerry by 10% with men but Kerry beats * by 20% with women. My belief in the ability of women to be much more practical and less married to their ideology continues.

8. This is great news for Colorado
What county do you live in? I'm in Jefferson and it's pretty old time conservative out here. Although I was surprised to see so many Dem contributors in that web site that detailed contributions. Many Dean and Clark folks.

9. Denver.
As I said on another thread, about as Denver County as you can get--I'm about three blocks from the state capitol. :)

11. This is amazing.
If we turned the tables... imagine if we had a truly wretched democratic president ... just really scary awful (like bush).

What would I do? Register as a republican? I can't imagine myself EVER registering and voting republican. Ever.

So, these crossover votes are an amazing phenomenon.

Yay to yer ma!

13. I'm with you on the three toed sloth.
I wish Kerry had a litle more Clinton folksiness and charisma, but it's ABB from here on in.
