I live in the heart of the Bible belt - a church on every corner (many with more than one on every corner). Almost everyone around here is either a Baptist or a Pentecostal. These folks LOVE Ashcroft. We went to a church for a while where all they could do was talk about how Bush had to have God's support, because he chose Ashcroft. I have a lot of kids in my class whose parents are major religious right fanatics. We were discussing the 2 party system in social studies, and one kid came out and said, "Well, if you are a Christian, you can't be a Democrat." I nearly lost it! Thankfully there are many African American kids who are very religious in my class whose parents are politically active, and one of them set that kid straight. But, that is the prevailing attitude around here. I am part of a small, ,very small, handful of liberals in this district. BUT I will say that the economy has gotten some of those around (mostly blue collar types) to say they aren't voting for Bush again. My point, is out in conservative areas, attacking AShcroft would be a BAD move for Democrats. Out here and places like where I live, they need to stay focused on the economy.
