Okinawa demands US exit in 15 years
TOKYO, March 24: The governor of a small Japanese island, a major base for US forces in Asia, took on the United States on Friday, saying he wanted troops in a disputed heliport to be out after 15 years.
Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine told a news conference that US military use of a new heliport set to replace part of a controversial base must be limited in order to send a message that U.S. troops will not be on the island forever.
Washington adamantly opposes any limits, citing security concerns.
