BBV: This is how scared Florida officials are of a clean vote
Edited on Tue Apr-13-04 10:58 AM by BevHarris
As you may know, Florida is being sued by Robert Wexler for paper ballots, on the grounds that you can't recount without them. So what did (gotta be replaced!) Secretary of State Glenda Hood and her cronies do? Tried to outlaw recounts with touch screens.

Citizens, like you, are having a real impact. A bunch of Floridians embarked on heavy lobbying and email campaigns, and the Senate Judicial Committee reversed course, took the no-recount concept off the table, and opened the door for touch-screens with paper ballots.

So now what does Glenda Hood do? She announces that she's making it easier to cheat on absentee ballots. Yes, folks, even though Florida already caught one rigged election by checking the witness signatures on the absentees, Glenda Hood is now trying to get rid of the witnesses on absentee ballots.

All this, and plenty more, on the new "newsfeed" column at http://www.blackboxvoting.org.

Also in today's news: Riverside County California -- as you'll recall, we revealed security flaws and access by a couple Sequoia techs that appears to violate California law. This is being turned over to the D.A. Local citizens aren't hopeful, though, because they consider this D.A. to be a very close crony of some of the problem people. But we'll see.

And for you Ohioans, note that there's a big rally happening on Saturday April 17. Never say you can't make a difference; an Ohio senate committee just told Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell that they want him to drop the $128 million touch screen order for Ohio. They don't have the final say, but they have influence. You, the citizenry, have influence too, so head for the rally.

Also, ES&S got caught using uncertified software in Indiana.

In California, it was just revealed that186 of 763 Diebold voter-card devices failed, with multiple problems, at least a half-dozen things. Gee, and I just did a radio show with the assistant registrar of elections for that county on AA, and she said "there were hardly any problems." She said maybe 7 places had a problem.

All this is linked in the newsfeed column at http://www.blackboxvoting.org.

1. Insane
period.

Is Jon Stewart the only frickin' person covering this on a humor show no less?

I see some stuff in print newspapers but have yet to see a big expose on the corporate whore media.

2. There actually was a lot of coverage on the networks...
during the early primaries. Bev was on Good Morning America and did a fantastic job! We have to keep working with our local and state officials to keep it on the radar.

10. Interesting... wonder what the 10 million dollar bond is for
which they are requesting because of the potential problems. Could it be that some state officials realize if there are problems (ala the special election in florida) that to remedy it would be a ... special election/revote??? which would require money? OTher than that - I can't imagine the requirement for such a high bond. Perhaps there is a different answer - but that is one way that states could force the companies to WANT to put in systems to prevent problems (because the costs to the company would be too great to not do so.)

12. item says - Johnson county = Franklin, Indiana
there were items - maybe last January - about requesting public input in a community forum discussing the possibility of electronic machines in Franklin. Don't know which other communities may have adopted the machines. Franklin is probably 15 miles south of Indianapolis.

7. The people of Florida should quickly petition to recall Glenda Hood
if this is an option in Florida. She is blatantly acting against their best interests for no credible reasons. A recall movement might help make the BBV a more prominent national issue.

9. Jebbie made this position appointed, not elected
Just like (gotta be replaced) Mischelle Townsend, Riverside County Elections Registrar, and (gotta be replaced) Sally McPherson, San Diego County Elections Registrar.

And if you think that's outrageous, the Maryland official, Linda Lamone, who bought Diebold touch-screens over everyone's objections, had people in the Maryland state senate trying to have her appointed for life.

These people have almost total control over the lack of security in our voting system, and we can't even vote 'em out.

But you can vote out those who appoint them.

If the machines count your vote fairly.
