Seeking verification of this rumour
Each day I scour through many news outlets online to check the information that the mainstream propaganda tends not to show or show months later. I came across this piece last week...and had to tell myself that this was only a rumour not yet verified by multiple sources (necessary for increased validity of a source).

David Wiggins, a Conscientious Objector, writes a few articles for lewrockwell. Yes, I know it's a conservative website but I appreciate their antiwar and antineocon contents, even though I disagree vehemently with their local politics. His latest article stated that David heard from a "reliable inside source in the govt/army administration" that Bush made a comment the same day he went to the St Louis Cardinals' homeopener. Basically, it went like this: Bush was asked about the shortage of equipment for the US troops in Iraq...according to Wiggins' source, Bush hesitated before smirking and reliving Marie Antoinette, "Let them eat lead". Well, if this was ever confirmed and put out for everyone to see...a hell of a shitestorm, for sure. Anyway, I went back last weekend to reread this article...but it was no longer on the archives. I thought perhaps this article was retracted due to it being unverified or proven false. However, this morning, I checked google, and found this:

'Let Them Eat Lead' by David Wiggins
'Let Them Eat Lead'. by David Wiggins by David Wiggins. ... According to this official,
President Bush hesitated for a second, then smirked, "Let them eat lead.". ...

Do you think this page not appearing is due to retraction or due to threats of legal action or due to threats via censorship or due to hacking?

1. Why don't you contact the owner of the site and ask?
Frankly, I don't believe he could be THAT stupid... Well... Hummm...

Forget it.

'Let Them Eat Lead'
On being informed that many poor US foot soldiers were dying or dead, he listened on in silence. Mr. President, what will we do?" he was asked. According to this official, President Bush hesitated for a second, then smirked, "Let them eat lead."

'Let Them Eat Lead'
by David Wiggins
I recently received an email from a reliable administration source. This highly reputable source tells me that between campaign fundraisers, watching Major League baseball games, and vacationing at his Texas ranch, his top advisors told President Bush of the Sadr Offensive and the deteriorating situation in Iraq via conference call. On being informed that many poor US foot soldiers were dying or dead, he listened on in silence. Mr. President, what will we do?" he was asked. According to this official, President Bush hesitated for a second, then smirked, "Let them eat lead."

4. I suspect hacking by the WH.
There have been verified cases where quite a few things that were "not to the Presidents liking" were altered or removed from many gov't web sites. I think this original post was simply removed, and I'd bet that the second one will be removed as well, as soon as it's found.

6. ah, c'mon
Does anybody actually think that Bush has anything approximating the wit it would take to toss that off, off the cuff??

Cripes, it involves knowing who Marie Antoinette was, knowing what she allegedly said and the circumstances in which she said it (and that he was standing in a reasonable facsimile of those circumstances), having all that come to mind in an instant in the situation, and having his brain come up with a word rhyming with "bread" that fit the situation like a glove, and thinking all that, and saying the result, right there (rather than to his spouse or bathroom mirror later that night as some of us actually known for occasional wit sometimes do).

Benchley had the shorter correct answer. It's Lew Rockwell, it's shit. One way or another.

14. I'm with you, iverglas,
those were my first thoughts too. I'm skeptical he knows who Marie Antoinette was.

8. true . . . but this is so in keeping with his character . . .
I wouldn't be at all surprised if he said something this stupid . . . "stupid is as stupid does," as mama always used to say . . .

9. Always tempting!
I saw it, too, and this kind of stuff is SO tempting. However, it just doesn't pay off to use material originating from unknown and unconfirmed sources (some official, a high-ranking officer, an insider, etc.). We must maintain high standards of integrity or we're no better. There's PLENTY available that can be proven.

10. GWB is not that clever.

That quip would require a quick mind, and at least some familiarity with history. Bush has neither.

Also, it's just too perfect. I seriously doubt that Bush would equate himself with Marie Antoinette (even if he did know who she was). I expect he'd see himself as John Wayne with money, not as some sort of French aristocrat.

I just don't believe it.

11. You're right. Had the quote been something like this:
"They've got a saying here, maybe here, I know they had it in France, I guess they've got it here - let them eat lead, shame on, shame on...you. Let them eat ...you can't eat lead twice!"

I would have believed it.

13. The first place I'd go is snopes.com....
But I have a feeling this is bullshit, just like those RW e-mail spams about Kerry being a prima donna in Vietnam or Clinton killing hundreds of staffers and underlings.

Let's not get sucked in so fast....

15. Understandable
That's why places like this makes for good fishing grounds to check for further verification of questionable articles. As for the replies that Bush probably could not come up with such literary gems, very palpable rebuttals!

Until articles such as this can be verified with solid references, I have no intention of spreading this around beyond verification checks or using this as arguments.
