Gosh Forgive Me: I Agree With Pat Buchanan
"No End To War"

Buchanan trashes the Neocons.

"On the dust jacket of his book, Richard Perle appends a Washington Post depiction of himself as the “intellectual guru of the hard-line neoconservative movement in foreign policy.”

The guru’s reputation, however, does not survive a reading. Indeed, on putting down Perle’s new book the thought recurs: the neoconservative moment may be over. For they are not only losing their hold on power, they are losing their grip on reality . . . ." (more)

1. Lots of populist libs agree with Buchanan on things...
...since he is a populist con. We often agree on labor and trade issues, but part company on social issues and race. Nothing to be ashamed of there. I find Pat preferable to Bush by a long shot.

14. "Part company" all the way to the camps, I think
if he were president. Thanks but no thanks. The man's an unabashed racist, and as for homophobia...!

2. I agree with Buchanan about half the time
He is capable of making a lot of sense. He is also capable of being quite possibly insane. He's better than a Bush anyday.

5. What year was it he spoke at the republican convention?
I don't remember but it was a flat out racist, anti-semite speech. He was disgusting.

Unfortunately, he might still feel the same way but is just smart enough to not express it plainly in his columns and articles.

8. Yeah, but Pat...
sincerely believes what he says. He will almost never deny he said something, when he did. Pat also is not a buck passer. shrubbie says one thing and if it goes badly he changes his tune. shrubbie says black is white, then when he's called on it says, we never said that.

3. Buchanan was against this Iraq invasion from the beginning for
solid American patriotic reasons, the real patriotic reasons not the neo-facist lockstep of the so-called patriotic conservatives. This is why we agree with him, however, he is still old Republican conservative paint and don't forget it.

13. Old fascist, you mean.
Economically and in national policy he may be "old Republican," but ever listened to him talk about race? Or (gulp) his views on homosexuality? Not to mention the arts. Then again, most of those views were probably pretty standard in, oh, say, 1800; I guess you could call that "old school," sure.

15. Yes, Buchanan sounds good on some things, but...
In the past few years I've found myself agreeing with Buchanan on some things. For instance, Buchanan seems concerned about all the manufacturing jobs that are disappearing, which Bush doesn't seem to care about. Buchanan even said measures should be taken even if they interfere with the so-called "free market", which is heresy to the chamber of commerce Republican types.

He has said so many good things that I went to the library and started reading "Right from the Beginning". A few pages in I came back to my senses and realized how nutty he is.

I also see people as representing constituencies - Gephardt was labor, Kucinich is the left wing of the Democrats, Steve Forbes is chamber of commerce Republcians, Alan Keyes is religious right Republicans. Buchanan's constituency seems to have had much of the same shift of thinking as Buchanan did over the past years.

4. Whew! Glad it's not just me.
Sometimes, I think the man actually makes good sense and speaks plainly, and I thought I was losing my mind.

Awhile back, I got really afraid when I was looking forward to listening to a crotchety Lou Dobbs too!

I always get scared when these guys start sounding sane.
Pat usually ruins the mood in the long run, 'tho.

When I started to realize that, it freaked me out because all I could think was "OMG! Things are so far out of control that Pat Buchanan actually makes sense!!!"

7. One of the Most Frustrating thinks about Pat
When he criticizes and dresses down the conservatives, he is thoughtful, articulate, passionate and he hits the target perfectly. Give Pat credit, when he's right, he's right. And on this he is oh so very correct.

9. Scares Me Everytime I Agree With Him
I agree with the others who have said that one thing about Buchanan is that he seems to believe what he says. Too bad half of that is frighteningly backward.

10. Nice piece by Pat.
His attempts to distance chimpy from neocon policy ring hollow, however.

That said, it is traditional conservatives like Pat that must wrest back control of the conservative wing of the Republican Party if we are to be relieved from the horrors of neocon ideology. Defeating the neocons (candidates) at the polls is not enough, they will roar back. The neocons must be permanently discredited and for this we will need the assistance of our traditional opponents like Mr Buchanan.

Thanks Pat, for a generally on-target article, how about speaking to the anti-Catholic biases of the neocons' allies, the fundies. I suppose we can't expect you to give up your public support for the chimpster... but then again you did run against him.

11. My $.02 on Buchanan
Even at his most retrograde, and even when he was a Rethug, I've always found Buchanan at least somewhat interesting. And now, even though he still has a lot of views I find offensive, Buchanan is anything but a GOP party-line shill. I'll gladly listen to Buchanan over morons like Pigboy, Sean Vanity, or Ann Colt-face any day.

12. Stopped clock. Twice a day. In his case it's a cuckoo clock.
I'm glad he's trashing Bush, but in no way do I trust the man, and he is most definitely *not* a preferable option to anybody, just horrible in a different way. I haven't forgotten his "it was probably better in the original German" (tm Molly Ivins) speech to the RNC, thanks.

17. it shows me how bad the situation is.
i think that people should work on things they agree on first then discuss, i said discuss, things on which they differ, find out why they differ then proceed. to me that is civilization.
the prez has managed to piss many different people off, for many different reasons. i hope the dart board of issues that show the true nature of this administration becomes as big as the side of a barn.
